Why Oregon may be even better in 2012

08:20 AM ET 08.08 | It's no small wonder Chip Kelly, who nearly left college football for the NFL's Buccaneers, is back in Eugene. Despite the departures of All-America running back LaMichael James and quarterback Darron Thomas, the 2012 Ducks may be even better. Oregon returns 11 of 22 starters, so there are spots to fill. But as Kelly points out, last year's Rose Bowl team had 10 seniors and this one has 16. Plus, senior running back Kenjon Barner may be nearly as talented as James, and the top quarterback candidates, sophomore Bryan Bennett and freshman Marcus Mariota, have run-pass skill sets that may fit Kelly's hurry-up spread formation even better than Thomas, who threw for 2,761 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2011.
