08:35 AM ET 08.09 | Soon, we'll be a mere month from the end of the current CBA. With the issue of supplementary discipline a large part of the Wednesday's agenda, talks grew increasingly contentious between the NHL and NHL Players' Association during Day 2 of labor negotiations. Mathieu Schneider, special assistant to NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr, wouldn't go so far as to characterize the negotiations as "adversarial," but he did concede that there were some tense moments between the two camps. "At times there have been heated exchanges," Schneider said. "There's definitely strong opinions on both sides, especially when it comes to supplementary discipline, but I wouldn't describe it as adversarial. Not at all."

Wow. Labor (labour for our friends North of the 49th parallel) negotiations that are adversarial at times.
Yawn.

If anything needs to change in hockey its the supplemental discipline. Fines and suspensions are handed out in an arbitrary manner now. Putting language in the CBA that would list criteria for certain levels of discipline would help. Putting player reps or former players on the safety committee that decides the penalties might make it a little fairer and more consistent.

This will never fly BF. It's far too well thought out and logical.

Stop with that kind of language. It's inappropriate.

The problem is, that they need the ability to be arbitrary. And they need to make the bad guys look bad, and most of all, they need to look like they're reacting and doing something.
Think of The Avery Rule....forgetting everyone's opinion of him, let's pretend that it was someone else that waved a hand in front of LOTF...making a rule like that in the middle of a playoff run, suspending a player based on that as yet unwritten rule...they'd never hot gotten away with it.

These are good ideas. The only thing I wonder about is that there is an ex-player now in charge of overall discipline and it's been a mixed bag at best in terms of decisions. What needs to happen is for Bettman and the league to understand that fighting is not detrimental to the game and will actually make it more palatable to more fans as it will deter the cheap stuff that no one likes. Let the players settle things on the ice and there won't be any more head hunting or slew footing.

Far too sensible to actually be considered.

Good points. I forgot about Shanny, he hasn't really helped has he?
We better be careful, too many good ideas and the interns may shut down this site.

Only in Slovakia.
And seeing as it's labour talks it's probably "deaference."
