Gregg Williams was interviewed for the Redskins' head coaching vacancy yesterday, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, while numerous NFL executives and agents continue to say they believe he is the favorite to get the position. Williams, Washington's assistant head coach-defense, spent the past four years on Joe Gibbs's staff and has strong support from players and coaches at Redskins Park.

It only makes sense to give him the job. He would do fine.

January 13, 2008  09:27 AM ET

Smartest move Snyder could make...which means of course he won't do it.

January 13, 2008  09:51 AM ET

What about Bob?

January 13, 2008  10:12 AM ET

It's kind of weird. They more or less guaranteed Williams the job and left in a proviso that he'd get a mil. if he didn't get the job.

That's sort of loaded considering the Rooney rule. Seems like that's 2 vacancies that just about skirted the rule.

Now any interviews with "minority" candidates will seem like a token. Teams should be open minded and check out what's there before going with the old standby. They might be surprised and find another Tomlinson.

*Tomlin*

January 13, 2008  10:42 AM ET

Gregg Williams is the right man for the job. He has the support of the coaching staff and players. Now the Redskins just need to do the mandatory minority interview and then Gregg can start his tenure as the Skins next head coach.

No reason to hope to be surprised by finding another Tomlin when the obvious choice is already on the payroll.

The only other guy out there that I would also be happy with would be Russ Grimm.

January 13, 2008  11:50 AM ET

Doesn't Williams have a reputation of being hard to work with? Not all good coordinators make good head coaches (See Norv Turner).

January 13, 2008  12:01 PM ET

Of course! See my name? Agreed with Triple A

January 13, 2008  12:45 PM ET

That's funny boston_rob. And, sadly, probably prophetic.

January 13, 2008  12:46 PM ET

Hey young lady, enough wth the sign. I know you're rooting for a Dallas win today being that you're a Cowboy fan at heart!

January 13, 2008  01:07 PM ET

Hiii Hooah! Waddup? Hahah, over my dead body.

January 13, 2008  01:45 PM ET

cant they ask the commissioner to bypass the rooney rule since they obviously know who they want as a coach and it would be a waste of time to interview a minority? this is why the rule is a joke. the interviewee is going to know he isnt going to get the job. why should he even show up?

January 13, 2008  02:12 PM ET

I think Gregg is the best man for the job too. I only hope they give Al Saunders enough money to coax him to stay on to run the offense. Both are certainly capable of taking over the head coach job, but the scales tip in favor of Williams.

January 13, 2008  02:16 PM ET

Williams is not a head coach. Dan Snyder will probably go out and try to hire Marv Levy next. Another moronic move is in order.

January 13, 2008  02:21 PM ET

It makes no sense to hire Williams (ie; Buffalo). Dan Snyder will probably go out and try another moronic move and get Marv Levy out of retirement.

January 13, 2008  02:31 PM ET

Gregg Williams is a defensive genius, BUT he helped run LaVar out of Washington (of course, LaVar did help that along as well). That's strike ONE.
Ask Bills fans about his tenure there. Strike TWO.
The fans want Cowher (or Russ Grimm). I'M of the opinion Al Saunders should be afforded the DIGNITY of an interview, then kept on for the new coach. You CAN'T ask Jason Campbell to learn yet ANOTHER offensive scheme.
But, we Redskin fans know Dan Snyder. He'll EFF this up so royally...
HIRE A FRIGGIN' G.M., DAN!!! Do you even CARE about us, the FANS???

January 13, 2008  02:36 PM ET

The worst choice as head coach. Defensive Coordinator is what he is no more. look at the mess he made in Buffalo.

January 13, 2008  02:46 PM ET

There is a clause in Williams contract that says that if doesn't get the Skins HC job, Washington will owe him $1 million.

This story is 100% false and someone should be sued !
Dan Snyder is going to put 5 guys and 4 chairs in a room [along with his brainless trust] and play "Hail To The Redskins" on his cd player and then at some point hit pause.....and whomever is a candidate and gets a seat is still in the hunt and whoever doesn't, must leave the room until their is a finally a head coach sitting in the chair.
Do you know how I know this?
Because this is what he has done since he bought the team.
Good Luck in your new head coach search Skinheads.
