'Severe' setback in Steelers' offense

08:01 AM ET 08.10 | At least in its first unveiling, the rough draft that is the NFL preseason showcased Todd Haley's new Steelers offense. Ben Roethlisberger spent one very long opening series tossing a lot of very short passes mixed among some short runs as the Steelers took 16 plays to move 52 yards and score on Shaun Suisham's 46-yard field goal. Roethlisberger said, basically, that the offense was vanilla and really did not go deep into the playbook. ... Some air went out of that first drive when fullback David Johnson hobbled off with a right knee injury in the middle of it. Coach Mike Tomlin called it "severe" after the game, and it appears it is a torn ACL, knocking him out for the season. The only other fullback on the roster is Will Johnson.

Was that Flozell I saw lining up at left tackle last night?

Sorry, Steeler fans - that wouldn't do much for me either.

Not good.

You can make the players try to fit your system, or find a system that fits your players. If it is dink and dunk you are after, then you might as well trade Big Ben to a team that knows how to use him.

I just don't know about Haley in Pittsburgh.

*BUT, it is just an opening series of the first pre-season game, so...

Neither do I. His rep certainly got a lot of mileage out of Kurt Warner, Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald.

I kind of like 16 play, 10 minute opening drives. A TD would have been preferable, but a field goal is certainly ok.

Don't put too much faith in Suisham though, Matt.

Remember last week, 50, and the thread about Ben's "little" rotator cuff tear? Perhaps dink and dunk is all he's capable of. If there really is a tear, it needs surgery, and the long ball might be a serious challenge to his shoulder at this point.

Isn't Flozell a medication for urinary tract disorders?

Nice. I guess his mom just really liked the name.

I think you guys will be loving Haley in a few months. At the very least when in the 'gun teams will have to guess run or pass unlike Arians and that stupid empty backfield and 5 WR's he loved. (didn't that lead to every one of Ben's injuries?) I hope Rainey gets some major PT, he looks like a nightmare for defenses.

If their offense eats up the clock like that, and their defense plays the way they usually do, they will be fine. Boring, but fine.

He was awsome in 2010, not so much last year.

He can get that repaired.

Yeah. But, I had rotator cuff surgery, and it was a 6-month rehab. And I still can't throw the long ball.
