No guarantees beyond 2012 for Acta

08:12 AM ET 08.10 | The numbers over an 11-game losing streak were too hard to swallow for Paul Dolan. Outscored 95-35. Starting pitchers had an earned run average of 10.44. Team batting average of .224. Outscored 32-12 in the first two innings. ... Dolan declined to discuss [Manny Acta's] future beyond this season -- or that of anyone else in the front office. "We assess everyone at the end of every season," he said. "As painful as this has been, I don't want to get into some knee-jerk reactions." While [Chris Antonetti] recently said he expected Acta to return in 2013, there is no guarantee of that at the moment. Acta is under contract for 2013, but it's clear Dolan wants to see how the team performs for the rest of the season.

Even when the Indians were above .500, and leading the division, they had a negative run differential. They're an unlikely 15-7 in one-run games, which goes a long way in making a bad team look better than it is. It was just a matter of time before this "righted" itself.

I imagine the Orioles number is coming up soon, too. They're a ridiculous 22-6 in one-run games and, with a -53 run differential on the season, are probably the worst team in the AL East. I don't know if they'll drop to that level in the standings over the next month and a half, but the luck's gotta run out one of these days.

I don't think you can blame Acta for a team with mid-level talent at best. Get him a few more pitchers, then let's talk about his performance. Until recently, the Indians were playing pretty good ball. They just ran out of steam ... and talent.

Slinky clearly identifies data that unfortunately supports a smoke and mirrors perception of the Indians. In further concern I see two consecutive seasons where this Acta led team has started out very well and then around mid June seems to either fall apart or as the above data indicates, simply reveal their true selves.I will go on record as saying I was dissapointed when they hired Acta, but I have been impressed with his leadership. He preaches a "no excuses" play the game the right way philosophy.Indians ownership has said several times they would spend money for talent when the time was right. They IMO have failed to do that. (example Josh Willingham)They have fired the pitching coach and I believe more changes will and should come with Acta and GM Chris Antonetti.

Acta seemed like a solid choice.

All teams have good streaks and bad streaks; teams with too little talent just have more and worse bad streaks. Changing the manager won't make the team better. Changing the GM might help. Giving the GM some extra money to spend would probably help the most. The trades that haven't worked out suggest that the GM isn't doing a very good job so that is probably where I would start.

That is a pretty impressive mark despite their current standing. When they were in first earlier this year, they seemed like world beaters, playing very cohesively.

I kind of like Acta. If for nothing else, there was a dust up with the Yankees last season and Acta was right in Girardi's face and looked about ready to go all Fausto-Carmona-To-Gary-Sheffield on him.

I really don't think a manager can influence the outcome too much. I think they're kind of like moral support.

Firing Acta because he can't make a crap team a competitor seems unfair.

Another perspective is that in two consecutive seasons, Acta has led a couple of talenented guys and a gagle of crusty betches deep into the season looking like competitors when they weren't.

Maybe the AL Central is to thank for that.

The trades the Indians have made for the likes of Cliff Lee, Sabathia, and Victor Martinez for prospects have not panned out.

I'm with you on this one, TRUTH.

If you had told me that the Indians would trade Sabathia, Lee, Martinez and Blake and that the best thing they'd get in return would be from the Blake trade, I'd have slapped you in the mouth and crapped my pants.

The haul they got for two Cy Young winners and an elite hitting catcher is completely underwhelming. That's a bit of a surprise because Shapiro (who is Antonetti's boss) was responsible for the Colon trade, which brought Sizemore, Lee and Phillips to the Indians.

To some extent -- maybe a large one -- it sure is.

Hmmm drunklush ego maniac who dryhumps stray pets? That LaRussa?

Dagweed believes those are all characteristics a successful manager must have, not to mention allowing rampant steroid use under your watch.
