08:22 AM ET 08.10 | Already this summer, the name of Calgary Flames defenseman Jay Bouwmeester has sparked speculation in cities such as St. Louis, Philadelphia and Nashville. On Thursday morning, Michigan-based mlive.com reported the Detroit Red Wings are talking trade with the Flames, targeting the 29-year-old workhorse to fill the massive void left by the retirement of soon-to-be Hockey Hall-of-Famer Nicklas Lidstrom and the departure of Brad Stuart. The report cited Red Wings "team sources." ... The Flames, who have missed the playoffs in three straight campaigns, would be crazy not to listen to offers for their soft-spoken assistant captain. They'd also be crazy to give him away without a quality return.

breaking news: Bouwmeester is in Babcock's doghouse for tanking plays, and the trade is not even complete

Love the picture. Hate the speculation.

First the Monster and now this?

Has Holland lost his freakin' mind?

This is reason why the system is broken. Teams are lining up for Bouwmeesters and his terrible contract. Because it no longer is the worst contract.

Good quality post right there.

I think the Wings figured the Flames WAY overpaid for Hudler, so why wouldn't they accept a trade of another cast-off for Bouwmeester?

Red Wings actually have been known to do that from time to time. But from time to time it's also bitten them in the arse (cough, Uwe Krupp; double cough, Robert Lang; triple cough, Cujo...).

At this point, if all the sudden dion phaneuf to Detroit rumors started hanging out there, it wouldn't be a shock. I'll be here if you need a shot.

That he is!!! Said this earlier when everyone believed every free agent was Motor City bound...it ain't the dream destination...I mean, once Darren McCarty was gone, what's left?

Which is why the owners need to change the CBA so they can stop doing stupid things like this.

Not to mention Kirk Maltby. You can't just lose cornerstones like that and expect to still be a dream destination.

Plus, it's not like the city of Detroit has become a beacon of light in the rust belt. Unles that light is burning abandoned buildings, or Prince Fielder's stove.

Yeeeees, but they already have him. Hence the "no more" part of the comment ;)

Flames paid for what Hudler did last season for the Wings. At least you don't have to hear the announcers mispronounce his name anymore:)

And Draper. Faceoffs won percentage went way down after he left.
