Packers desperate to sign Benson?

09:48 AM ET 08.11 | In practically every way, this move would deviate from the Ted Thompson playbook. He's 29 years old with more than 1,500 career carries on the odometer. By running back standards, Cedric Benson is a dinosaur. The Green Bay Packers current crop of backs is young and the general manager typically prefers patient player development over veterans who may get in the way. And there's the checkered past. Benson has been arrested multiple times. Of course, in 2010, Thompson passed on the troubled Marshawn Lynch. But two weeks into training camp, Thompson has apparently felt compelled to do something about the Packers' running game. One day after a miserable 21-13 exhibition loss to the San Diego Chargers in which two of their three running backs fumbled, the Packers are on the cusp of signing Benson. An NFL source told the Journal Sentinel Friday that a deal was not done, but is "probable." Rather than re-sign Ryan Grant or stick with a trio of players with two seasons of experience or less each, the Packers appear to be going with the durable Benson.

Desperate? After 1 preseason game? I don't think the Packers act that way...

Every year the Packers go through 3-4 RB's getting hurt, it seems.
Maybe this isn't as bad a move as it appears. I'm not a big fan of Ced... But the dude plays hard. And he isn't hurt all the time.

There are very few teams with that one "dominant" runningback anymore....running backs by committee..situational runners etc.. Along with less stellar offensive lines have made it necessary for that 3-4 back running attack..

Wow--one game. They must really not like what they have seen so far, or else they are just floating a rumor to light a fire under someone

Actually it's not one game, they see a lack of improvement over the 17 games of last season (actually add the previous season to that). Most Packer fans think this is a good idea. Just don't let him have a boat.

They've won as many titles with a dominant back (A.Green) as they have without and with the new arena league rules, who cares. Make Kuhn the #1 back. The issue really isn't who is running as it is who he's running behind.

I'm more worried about the Packers seasonal problems in the secondary, pass rush, pass block, injuries, and the lack off pass coverage by Hawk. As last year clearly illustrated you can't live on "bread" alone.

See Quote 13 for one way to help remedy this problem also think of this teams throw constantly against them cause they are almost always behind so of course they'll have bad pass defense #'s
