09:52 AM ET 08.11 | Under first-year manager Robin Ventura and his new-look coaching staff, the team has played a clean brand of baseball on the field and has been refreshingly distraction-free off the field. Enjoy it while you can. In the always-changing roster landscape driven by free agency, it says here the team as constituted will be no more after this season, whether it ends with a second ticker-tape parade in eight years or no postseason at all. Jake Peavy has a club option for a whopping $22 million. A.J. Pierzynski and Francisco Liriano will be big-money free agents. And Gavin Floyd, Kevin Youkilis and Brett Myers have pricey club options of $9.5 million or more. Youkilis, Myers and Liriano are big-ticket veterans who were acquired at bargain-basement rates in trades that vaulted general manager Ken Williams into Executive of the Year consideration. They were added with a 2012 postseason run in mind and nothing beyond that.

I don't see that as all bad. There's a lot of money tied up in aging players there.

If they go deep into the playoffs and possibly win an AL pennant, dissembling the team looks bad.

Statistically, he's having the best season of his career.

Well, if GMs did that, they wouldn't be good at their jobs.

I'd say he's playing for his last contract, not cheating.

The only one that should stay out of the six is A.J., three are rentals, one is a average player, and the pitcher is owned to much next season.

If he is an average catcher/player how come he gets paid so much ? Was he better and is fading >

yeah, and Pierzynski only if they sign him to a contract reasonable for a 36 year old catcher. They might get Liriano to sign for a reasonable price--I don't think the bidding will be too high for him. But they need to finish this season first, they still have a chance to make the playioffs.

I never said he was cheating, but it's interesting that you brought that up. What do you know?

The slimmest of chances.

I probably was. Mostly, I was just stirring the pot.
