Tight quarterback race at Texas A&M

08:45 AM ET 08.12 | Quarterback controversy. Quarterback competition. Quarterback luxury. Whatever one labels the traditional camp question, it's at full throttle at Texas A&M with kickoff less than three weeks away. In a twist on the old custom, however, it involves three players. Asked to evaluate the play of Jameill Showers and Johnny Manziel after Saturday's scrimmage at Kyle Field, first-year coach Kevin Sumlin tossed in another name. "How about Showers, Manziel and (Matt) Joeckel?" Sumlin said. "You need to evaluate all three." Showers emerged from spring drills leading the pack, but Sumlin and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury still declared the competition open. Saturday showed why. Manziel, a former Kerrville Tivy standout, outplayed Showers, while Joeckel threw three touchdown passes (same as Manziel) in his limited time. Based on Saturday's showing, Manziel likely now holds an edge based on his ability a week into camp to make quick reads and get rid of the ball faster than the other two. Sumlin said before camp he would name a starter no later than two weeks before kickoff, but Saturday, he said that decision might stretch into this coming weekend.

Hoping all this apparent offensive prowess is a direct reflection of a scchittey defense. Scrimmages never answer that issue.

Bet Kingsbury wishes he'd brough Keenum with him to BCS. Seems like Keenum played for 10 years, why not a few more.

I think Manziel caught a break and played them in the 2nd half.

Yeah, but can you think of a better pure aggie example than a kid from the rock/ranch country of Kerrville?

Two and a half weeks to the opener and the SEC opener is next and you still don't know who your starter is by now. We need some company at the bottom of the division.

Unfortunately, that same description applies to the Gators.

Any bandwagon that has the Gators as picks to win the East is likely to have plenty of available space on it, so spread out and enjoy the room, Doc.

It will be interesting to see how the sheep molesters do in 2012. Might end up 6-6, might be 3-9. I see 3 W's, 6 L's, 3 NFC's - SMU, MSU, Mizzou. ("NFC" is a construction acronym I picked up from guys I work with. All construction acronyms have an "F" in them. The other letters in this one stand for "No Clue".)If they prevail in all three NFC games and steal a win from Florida, Auburn, USC(e) or Arkansas, they could actually have a winning record in the regular season. My guess is they end up 6-6. They'll win one of the games they should lose, plus 2 of the 3 NFC games. Anyone else see their 2012 season unfolding radically differently?

LaTech, SMU, S. Carolina St. and Sam Houston St. should be wins for A&M. What a laughable OOC schedule.

Ole Miss should be a win for A&M.

Florida, LSU, Bama and Arkansas will be losses.

Auburn, Miss St. and Missouri are tossups.
