Free agency keeping Ortiz from rushing back?

08:19 AM ET 08.13 | On the shelf since July 17, David Ortiz will be out of action longer than expected. Originally the Sox medical staff and Big Papi himself felt like Sunday's series finale against the Cleveland Indians might be the day when he finally returns from the 15-day disabled list. But that hasn't been the case as his right Achilles strain is still slow to heal. ... [Ortiz is] also wary of pushing an injury that could worsen significantly if he pushed too hard, too fast. "If you go back and play sore, of course you could [tear it]. It's not healed. It's not ready and I don't want to run that risk," said Ortiz. "I'm a free agent after this year and I don't want to have a surgery going into free agency."

Not much left for the BoSox to prove this season. Ortiz doesn't have much left to prove, either. It'll be interesting to see what a DH-only guy can do in the off-season FA market... esp. if Hamilton (and the big bucks he'll get) are there.

You're smart to be conservative with this type of injury....otherwise you risk losing out again next year. Boston seems to be doing fine offensively without him so what's the hurry? The starting pitching seems to be getting some momentum going now too.

I think the AL should implement the designated runner for the designated hitter......:)

Man it would be so cool if the DH just bunted into an out or struck out every at bat. That's so exciting!

What would be cooler is seeing a starting pitcher go more than six innings....

What a great team player you have in Beam Town. If I am the Sox there is no way I would resign the GREEDY Ortiz, save that money on him and get you probably at least two good ball players to take his place.

Red Sox are fine. They will easily cruise to a tie for fourth. Time to move Ortiz, Beckett, Lackey, Bard, Pedroia, and Ellsbury. Sayonara Dice-K. A serious shake-up is needed, but I think Valentine should be allowed to stay on for the second year on his contract. He has done a good job (considering the circumstances).

Ortiz talks about his contract status waaaay too much. His good half season of stats will not net him a 2013 season that is even half of what the Sox are paying him this year. He's a DH who won't draw interest from half of the teams in MLB. And the other half will be mindful of how he got hurt: rounding second base. he got hurt executing a basic baseball move and it underscores that he is not getting any younger .

If you had to support that kind of weight, would you want to heal quickly?
