08:13 AM ET 08.14 | Manager Clint Hurdle is switching things up this week. [Hurdle] shuffled the Pirates' rotation Monday, ensuring that A.J. Burnett will stay on regular rest as the Pirates carry a six-man rotation through a stretch of 20 games in 20 days. Burnett was scheduled to pitch Friday's game in St. Louis against the Cardinals. ... As a starter, Burnett has a 3.96 career ERA on four days rest. His ERA increases to 4.12 on five days rest. The move bumped James McDonald, Thursday's scheduled starter, to Friday. McDonald has an 8.71 ERA in six starts after the All-Star break. Opponents are hitting .321 against him in those starts, and he has allowed 30 earned runs in 31 innings. McDonald will have six days of rest in between starts.

I thought only the Cards shuffled their rotation?

Maybe the real reason McDonald is fading because he is just a career 500 pitcher and he is running out of gas.

This seems to be all about keeping AJ (Staff Ace) on his normal rotation.

Based on the report I would say the same. But it may be that Hurdle thinks the rest of the staff could use some extra rest, and the reporter just didn't think that was important enough to mention. The original story does quote Hurdle as saying they would use the 6 days off for MacDonald to get in some extra sessions with the pitching coach.

Dude... I hope your not serious...

Hurdle is making this change now, cause the team is struggling (4 - 6 in last 10) and he wants to atleast say he did something when the Pirates ship began to sink :-)

I give 'em credit - we're still talking about the Bucs in August...

I think they've done a pretty good job of that. They've made huge strides from being the embarrassment they've been for the almost 2 decades since Bonds left.

They need to figure something out with this pitching staff to keep this new season ticket holder happy! Check out my new blog if you're interested -- following a new generation season ticket holder hoping to see a playoff run the rest of the season...
