Horizon for Astros even more bleak

08:17 AM ET 08.15 | This has been a long season in Houston, where fans may have to get used to them. Entering Tuesday night, [the free-spending] Angels were in third place in their division, eight games behind the Rangers and two games behind the Oakland A's. That division is the American League West. Welcome to your new home, Astros. ... The Astros are so far from contending in the AL West starting next season that they haven't begun to even think about it. "We have so much to do just blocking and tackling that's independent of the league we're in," Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said. "Our primary focus is on pitching, defense and run production. I will almost consider it a luxury where we're focusing on getting a designated hitter."

That's an understatement if I've ever seen one.......

They will be toast in the AL West. It's a long way uphill for them.

It should have been Milwaukee that was shifted over.

Yeah, they won't get to play the Cubbies next year.

August 15, 2012  10:39 AM ET

The Mariners will welcome the Astros with open arms knowing they will no longer be seller dwellers in the AL West anymore.

Bud wasn't going to let that happen, he spent too much capital getting the Brewers into the NL

Which is total horse manure.

Probably right. But the Brewers are the team Bud stole from Seattle, prompting Seattle to sue MLB and get a team put back in. I don't think he wants to revisit the scene of the crime.

Also, the Brewers might be able to be competitive. which could upset the balance of power in the west so those owners will be opposed as well. When you move a team that is likely to lose 100 games, no one gets too excited.

You got it. A commissioner with a statue in front of a MLB ball park. go figure.

The switch to the al should have been done by seniority, Arizona to AL, Houston stayls in NL! The problem is Bud Light! He will go down not only as the worst but also the dumbest Commissioner! Go Figure!

As a long time Astros fan I am livid over the move. This should never have happened, may Bud rot in hell.

Seattle will find a way to reclaim the cellar...

As far as the article goes - this guys focus is on "pitching, defense and run production" - yet he traded away Bourn, Wandy, Pence and like the whole bullpen (even though they were horrible).

Hopefully the new Owners have some $$$

In 5 years they will be playoff contenders. They got the top pick last year. They will get the top pick this year and probably the top pick next year and maybe the year after that. They are doing what Washington did. They signed the first 30 picks of their draft this year and plenty of the remaining 35.If they can do similar to this over the next 4-5 years they will have rebuilt their farm system and will have signed some potentially great players. The farm system has their teams all over a .500 winning % they last time I looked. We do have hope. Right now the biggest draw in town for base ball is the Sugarland ****,an independent league team.

hmm. I guess the name of the team is not printable. It is a slang term for mosquito.

Good point. I thought they should have sent the Rocks to AL, moved Houston to NL West. Marlins and TB don't have to play in the same league, neither do Yanks/Mets or Cubs/WSox--not sure why Houston/Rangers have to be in the same league and division.

Better do the Magellan thing then, sail around the world. Always new horizons.

Hope your projections come to fruition.

I will say, I have my concerns about a GM from the NL Cardinals trying to rebuild a farm system for a team about to move to the AL. I like the idea of what he is trying to do, just not sure if he can do it. I share your hope but am tempered with a healthy dose of pessimism, and am hoping the pessimism turns out to be incorrect.
