Ugliest academic scandal in NCAA history?

08:25 AM ET 08.15 | The athletic program at North Carolina is under renewed scrutiny, causing some to wonder how deeply it is troubled. UNC football -- and probably basketball -- is going down, and it'll go down in part because a member of the PackPride message board found a damaging transcript belonging to a former UNC athlete. ... UNC officials didn't want to know what was happening, so they stuck their heads in the dirt -- and it just got worse. How bad? Maybe the ugliest academic scandal in NCAA history. This one is worse than what happened in 2007 at Florida State. I mean, it's not even close. Florida State had some numbers that looked bad -- 61 athletes from 10 different teams -- but this UNC scandal dwarfs it.

Do they distinguish between "academic" scandals, and "generic drugs/booze/ho'ok'ers/tatts/$$" scandals?

Ooops, almost forgot "free shoes" scandals. How could a Gator forget that? ;-)

Well, it would be appropriate to report some quantitative measures (even if speculative) to support the assessment that the UNC academic scandal "dwarfs" the previous one at FSU (61/10).

What if the academic shenanigans amongst the student athletes is just the tip of the iceberg... What if cheating is so rife that academic scholarship students are involved? A significant portion of the faculty? What if published papers must be recanted and withdrawn? Corruption so pervasive that even the janitorial staff are involved as runners?

Penn State people will point to this and say "See, it's not just us."
While the two cases are not even close to being similar, if you look at Penn State boards, it is already being done.

What if this scandal dwarfs even the involuntary doping of athletes by the former East German state?

What if this scandal dwarfs even the institutionalized industrial espionage of China?
