Weber deal pinching Preds

08:31 AM ET 08.15 | Not only will Shea Weber earn more this season than anyone on the Predators roster, but his calendar year haul comes close to matching the second-richest deal in franchise history. The Predators have to pay Weber $27 million over the next calendar year -- as part of a 14-year, $110 million contract -- so there is more pressure on the small-market franchise to bring in more money. "It's not about me," [chief executive officer Jeff Cogen] said. "We come to work every day and we want to enhance the fan experience. We want to monetize some of the on-ice successes and re-invest it back into the team. ... We hope to compete and not just survive in the NHL. I would argue we are (competing)."

If Nashville needs to be fiscally smart, the Shea Weber deal does not make any sense at all.

I believe they did it because they had to, not because they wanted. With Suter gone and then having the ability to keep Weber but letting him go for money that would say to their fans they weren't willing to go all out.
They probably thought by letting Weber would cost them the chance to have a fanbase, instead they might regret it worse if they spend more than they bring in, have to raise prices then dont contend as well as hoped.
It's a lose/lose situation and I would have loved to have Weber from from a fans view I like what the Preds did.

get rid of these guaranteed contracts and bonuses.......make everything incentive based (as it is in the real world) when they hit the defined targets they get paid. The whole contract is way out of line......

I get the whole bonuses and structured contracts over decades, that was handled with the new CBA, but to make everything incentive based will just create a horrible league of (more) selfish players just trying to reach the incentive and not a team goal.
I think the cap, cutting the bonus and extended beyond playing years contracts is a good way to make teams decide how many baskets they want to put their eggs in.

Biggest problem as with Parise and Suter up in Minny is they have to shell out the shekels lockout or not.
