08:24 AM ET 08.15 | Both on and off the field, the Red Sox were roughed up Tuesday. Dustin Pedroia, who was named along with Adrian Gonzalez as the players most vocal in ripping Bobby Valentine at a meeting called by Sox owners on July 26 to discuss the state of the team, was upset with the manner in which he was portrayed in a Yahoo! Sports story. "I really haven't read it all. It's tough. We had a meeting -- I'll be honest with everybody -- we had a meeting in New York and the coaches had a meeting, Bobby had a meeting, we all had a meeting, and when I spoke I said we all need to get better." ... Asked if it was an easy solution to fire the manager, he said, "I don't think Bobby should be fired. Listen, we haven't played well. That's the bottom line."

Since September 3 of last year , the Red Sox have played .444 baseball over a 144 game span ( 64-80). The same as the Marlins this year. That takes more than a meeting to fix. When you play like the Padres for a year, it is time to get serious about who and what you are.

If Beckett and Lester were merely .500 pitchers, the Sox would be leading in the wild card race.

Actually, it's really only been the starting rotation. If they didn't suck so much ass, they'd have made the playoffs last year and be in the catbird seat for a wild card spot, and competing for the division.
They've scored the 3rd most runs in baseball, their bullpen's ERA is eleven points better than league average, so where's the problem? It's a $56m starting rotation with a 4.48 ERA that ranks 26th out of 30 major league baseball teams.
Give them even an average starting rotation and this team would be a competitor. Period.

Yes.
Last week I took a look at the Red Sox's winning % in games that Lester started from 2008-2011. If you applied that percentage to his starts this year, they'd be winning the wild card and only three games behind the Yankees.
But this is the Red Sox here, a franchise whose will to win is matched only by its inferiority complex, so the sky is falling.
