Cabrera suspension plays in Hamilton's favor

08:13 AM ET 08.16 | Despite his going nearly a month batting .115, Josh Hamilton remains an important cog, if not a barometer, of the Rangers' success. [And] if they needed a reminder of how weak this winter's free-agent market for big hitters will be, Melky Cabrera provided it with his drug suspension. Nobody was going to mistake Cabrera for Hamilton, anyway, but until Wednesday he might have ranked a distant second among free-agent middle-of-the-order hitters. How distant is second place now? How in the world would the Rangers find a Hamilton replacement? "You wouldn't," one Rangers person admitted Wednesday. ... [It's] no surprise that they're a lot better when he's performing at his MVP level.

It's time the Rangers spend some money trying to help him out with his Demons, the guy really hit the Ball!

Um, my understanding is that the Rangers have spent a LOT of money trying to "help Hamilton out with his demons" -- ranging from full-time counselors and advisors to working with this family. Hamilton is -- by all accounts -- a great team-mate and a once-in-a-lifetime talent. His freakishly powerful/fast body means he'll always be susceptible to certain kinds of sports-related injuries as well. The question is, with pitching at a premium (and 2 of the 5 starting Ranger pitchers are out for the season), do you want to tie up a sizeable chunk of your revenue for the next 6-7 years on this one player?

Hamilton has his demons for sure but he will likely always struggle with them. The opportunity cost with any team signing Hamilton is the risk of his addiction vs the terrific talent he has

Yep..............If he signs with the Yankees he may get eaten alive.................

Dagweed... The rangers spend a crap load of money helping him with his demons... The rangers pay for a sober coach and have someone travel with him every where he goes... So you tell me one team that would put up with that let me know.. The reds sure didnt hahaha bet they are hating life...

I doubt Melky's suspension will have any bearing whatsoever on Hamilton's payday. There are 30 teams in the league, plenty of opportunity for all of the top players.

cabrera's roids season it was too nice to think that it was a clean season,,, hamilton could be in the same spot, because if we stop and observe hamilton season there its not a injuried in rangers slugger wonder why??? peds had played a great advantage for the hitters and most of the times the players who are using peds are in the lineup producing like crazy!!

August 16, 2012  11:45 AM ET

best thing for hamilton?? stay with the rangers with peds or without them the texas would always give hamilton a spot in their lineup!!!

August 16, 2012  11:46 AM ET

cabrera MVP award should be removed and be donated to the child care beneficiency!!!

You are correct. There must not be many baseball stories today to run this article.
