Labor issues make Simmonds deal deceiving

08:22 AM ET 08.16 | According to a report out of Canada, the Flyers and Wayne Simmonds agreed to a six-year contract extension somewhere in the neighborhood of $24 million. Although this reported new extension will nearly double his salary, there is a strong possibility that with the league???s current labor uncertainty, the new deal could ultimately be worth less. For instance, the NHL???s original Collective Bargaining Agreement proposal on July 13 -- which was finally countered by the NHLPA on Tuesday in Toronto -- called for a 24-percent rollback in player salaries. So, if Simmonds signed a $24 million deal, and the NHL gets its way, his new extension is suddenly worth a little more than $18 million. The NHL has also proposed term limits on contracts of 5 years.

I dont think Simmonds is a super star but he is def a steal at 3.8 Mil over 6yrs due to his upside, at 3mil I think he needs to have a long talk with his agent for not taking this in account, or worse, for making him think it was a good deal.
As a Flyers fan I really like Simmonds, and glad he signed for 6yrs, but worried when unhappy players are in longer term contracts that underpay them. Sooner or later they either stop trying as hard or just become a cancer to the team...

I can agree with a 5 or 6 year deal there's security in that...now anything more is excessive

Not too crazy about those 14 year contracts eh? (I agree with you. 5 years is my personal choice for a MAXIMUM).

I really have to wonder with all the time you spend on here what is your return of investment/time? Especially since the regulars know exactly what you are and report you for the spam you are.

4-5 and more incentive laden.
And I think, include TEAM incentives in there, to wit;
If you score 40 AND we get to 2nd round.....
man I should be commisioner

You have my vote and that of several others. Problem is, I've heard rumblings you are too tall, don't invite David Stern to drop the puck at the All Star game, and too often speak in simple, declarative sentences which are easy to understand. Start working on that stuff and I'll get the bumper stickers printed.

Don't we already have a prickly member of the shrew family?
Canuck eh?

He is not and don't think he ever will be a superstar. A five year deal max with incentives is what he should get. If he makes 20 million, that oughta be more than enough for the role he plays.
Nobody expects…

what if i invite Stern and Bettman to start a new thing? When I was younger, there used to be something called "Midget Wrestling"....that seems too tame now, ...how about :
"Midegt Cage Fighting"?
And I will try to say things in very roundabout ways.....(this is getting bad...there are far tooo many Python references stuck in my head)
