NHLPA has for years advised preparing for lockout

08:33 AM ET 08.16 | It would be hard to come out of Wednesday's NHL comments with much hope for labor peace as of Sept. 15. [Donald Fehr] said the owners "have almost everything" from the players and added that only the owners have said they would shut the league down if the current agreement expires. "There's only one party here that's talking about Sept. 15," Fehr said. "The players haven't threatened a job action; it hasn't even been discussed. Hopefully it won't." However, Fehr said the players were ready for a lockout. "We have been advising the players to prepare for a couple of years for a worst-case analysis," Fehr said.

Just want to state for the record here that the PA's idea to limit non-player costs is absolutely brilliant. A bunch of uneducated athletes are advising the owners how to wisely spend their own money. The irony is uncanny.

Well, someone has to advise the owners on how to wisely spend their money. Looking at some of the contracts that have been handed out recently, it looks like they don't have a clue how to do it themselves.

The owners have been trying to get the players to save them from themselves by pushing massive pay cuts on them. It's funny that the players have come up with an idea to save the owners from themselves in a totally different manner that apparently escaped the owners attention.

Fehr says we will play without contract. Why should the owners trust a guy who led the MLb players to a strike midway through the 94 season. They might like to start the season to get some cash but who is to say they wouldn't walk out when it is conveniant for them.

Hey Phantom do you really care how the two sides split the billions. What effects the game the most and what is more important to the fans is contract lengths and when free agency kicks in. The real negotiations will start when the PA puts their complete proposal on the table, Sept 15 is closing in the PA should quit dragging their feet.

I have said in the past, make it a 50-50 split and let each side do what they can to earn extra $$ (ads, endorsements, etc.). I have zero interest in listening to millionaires quibble over percentage of revenue they get.
As for contract length and free agency, I've kinda given up caring about either as it's obvious by recent events that nothing will change. I don't care what the CBA ends up being, there is always going to be multiple teams who think they can win it all if they just sign this guy or that guy and they will over pay for him.
The PA is negotiating. Part of that is fighting the PR battle. The PA has said they will play until a new CBA is ratified. Whether they will or not is up to question but they sound better than the league threatening a lockout.
