08:14 AM ET 08.17 | With all kinds of issues swirling around the Red Sox, their top executives faced the media Thursday night, including president Larry Lucchino. "Every franchise, every brand goes through rough times. No one is immune to the hills and valleys," Lucchino said. "We've had a long run of success. We've created very high expectations for the franchise. Sometimes those high expectations are not met, and the result is a reduction, a hit to the brand and to the team and to the fan base. The cynical, jaded media do not necessarily capture the voice of the fan base." Lucchino also said he doesn't fear that players won't want to play for the Red Sox because of the controversies that have been swirling around the team since last September.

Boston had one of the top three records in baseball between 2003-2012. They have one of the worst records in the AL east over the last 162 games.

True. Remember, the Yankees had the best record in MLB in the 1980s, but because they never won a WS those years it was all considered a failure.

You can do that in Atlanta and be told what a great organization you are, but in NY and Boston the rubric changes.
