08:18 AM ET 08.17 | Starlin Castro may yet become a fixture in Chicago's future. The Chicago Cubs and [Castro] are working on a long-term contract, according to the All-Star shortstop's agent. "I've been working with the Cubs on contract negotiations for a period of time," Castro's agent Paul Kinzer, of the Wasserman Group, told ESPNChicago.com's Bruce Levine on Thursday. "Starlin would like to be a Chicago Cub for many years to come." Comcast SportsNet Chicago first reported Thursday that the Cubs and Castro are working on a deal that could be as long as six years and is expected to be completed by the end of the season. Kinzer told Levine that talk of a six-year deal is "premature at this time."

First line of defense in baseball is up the middle. The Cubs do ink Castro one part is secure, and now you are looking for a catcher and center fielder to start building your club for the future.

Lock up the first piece of a great future. I believe we Cubs fans actually have something to look forward to.

He looks like their best option, but his mental lapses are concerning. Some sort of karate training might help him learn to see the whole picture, not get too focused on what he is trying to do this instant. That is an area in which Jeter excels--seeing the whole picture.

Well... we are looking at 4-5 year re-build job. We only need to look at how Nationals build their team and try to follow that mold, instead of signing middling FA during the off seasons.

We need to suck and suck some more for 2-3 years to accumulate Picks and hopefully they will pan out down the line, or develop enough for us to pawn them off and grab couple of guys from Kansas or SD.

Going 56-106 for 2-3 years is going to be better than going 72-90 for every year for an entire decade...

With Castro's batting average down to .276, maybe the Cubbies can get a better deal from his agent.
