Will Mets offer Johan Santana to Dodgers?

The question might seem a bit silly after the lefty's latest shellacking on Friday night, and will be nearly moot if the Mets shut Santana down in the near future. But if the former ace is as healthy as many Mets people claim, and he stabilizes before the end of the year, could the team eat money and move him? The Daily News ran this question by several scouts and rival executives. One general manager floated an interesting suggestion: the suddenly flush Los Angeles Dodgers. "I don't have a feel for what his market would be -- especially with (the) Dodgers added in the mix," the GM said in an email. The logic behind speculating about the Dodgers and Santana, which we ran by several other baseball folks after hearing that suggestion, involves Los Angeles' recent willingness to assume more salary than most other clubs.

Santana probably will retire as a Met because no one in their right mind would take on his contract for an worn out left arm.

Looks like they owe him $25.5M for 2013, with a team option in 2014 that includes a $5.5M buyout. So basically they owe him $31M after this season. My guess is they would need to eat at least 25M for anybody to be interested. If that's the case they might as well keep him.

Keep in mind that the guy is coming back from surgery, and he pitched back to back gems, one of which was a no hitter. He's tired right now. I wouldn't be shocked if he comes back strong next season for about 150-180 innings.

He's being offered to everyone.....The cheapo Wilpons figure they might as well try to get someone to pick up some that remaining $25mil.....Mets will be scouring the scrap heap again this off season looking for lightning in a bottle bargains.....

Don't think he's damaged...I think he's reached his pitch limit for this year after coming back from the surgery.....he looks fatigued.....I think a full offseason of rest he'll be able to give you 180 innings next year...he won't be any help to anyone down the stretch so I don't see any trade happening....

After he left Minnesota he hasn't been himself. I don't see the value in him with the contract he has. Maybe if there was a new contract in place, I might think about him but he is just a shell of himself now.

He had surgery...give the guy a break. When he was on, he was on, pitched 2 gems this year and I agree with everybody who said he is just fatigued. He will have all off season to get stronger and if a team can get this guy on the cheap, it's a great pick up for next year.

Santana has won 46 games and lost 34 for a not so great Mets team so far into his contract. They would be smart to shut him down. But if they can get one great prospect for him aka pitcher in return then make the change. If not just let him rest this year is wasted. Bring up Wheeler to take his place and go from there. Remember pitchers usually take 2 years to recover fully from that surgery. Let him strengthen his arm and lead the charge, next year. Also the bullpen is looking like its shaping up, if the Mets are really watching these guys, Hafner, Gee, Edgin, Parnell, Franky and another real good lefty looks, and it looks like a really good pen for next year, Get rid of the rest of the nonsense in the pen and hold Ramirez in the minors till he get control. I LIKE Santana, Dickey,Niese,Harvey,Wheeler. Followed up by that pen....

You're talking about a starting pitcher who has one of the lowest career ERA among active players. If he gets his velocity back (which he probably will), he'll be an ace for any team. Remember he was quite effective up to the no-hitter having low 3 ERA. Fatigue must be a factor here recovering from surgery.
