Report: Traded Shoppach behind Red Sox text mutiny

09:36 AM ET 08.19 | Boston Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez was not the author of the now-infamous text message to Boston ownership complaining about manager Bobby Valentine, although it was sent from his cell phone, major league sources told the Daily News. Those sources also said new Mets catcher Kelly Shoppach was deeply involved in writing the message that touched off the latest Sox drama, but Shoppach would not confirm that charge. A small group of players that has been unhappy with Valentine this season ??? a group that included Shoppach, according to a source familiar with the circumstances ??? was complaining about the manager in late July and engaged Gonzalez in the conversation. A member of the group suggested that the only way to bring about action would be to voice their problems to ownership. Gonzalez was tired of hearing the constant grumbling and agreed with them that a message from him -- the team's highest-paid player -- would get management's attention. Several sources say Gonzalez had nothing to do with the message's content, which -- according to a report this past week on Yahoo! Sports -- indicated the team was unhappy that Valentine had left ace Jon Lester in a game to give up 11 runs against Toronto on July 22. "The text message was not his idea or his opinion . . . or his words," one said. Those were from the small group of players that included Shoppach.

In YankeeLand this would be a Billy Martin Dream, he would handle them one at a Time, and they would keep winning!!!

If it came from his phone it's his view....period

August 19, 2012  10:39 AM ET

And Shoppach isn't worth a ****, either.

Exactly. Gonzalez is being gutless here. He said go ahead use my phone. He knew the content of the message that would be sent and now he says he has nothing to do with it? Total BS o his part. just man up and move on.

Shoppach, a back up catcher, has more cujones than the safest, richest player on the team!

Look out Terry Collins, once Bitten, Twice Burned!!!

Classic stuff from Boston -- kick dirt on the guy leaving town. The malcontents are led by Petey Pedroia and Adrian Gonzalez both of whon said they do not want to play for valentine. Lucchino allowed the meeting which stabbed to people in the back - Bobb Valentine who was NOT invoited to the players' meeting with ownership, and Cherrignton, who the players totally by passed.

Right now you have Lucchino running baseball ops and aparently serving as bothe General Mgr and Field Mgr --- this is a losing formula for boston.

What else will hit the fan?

Look for Crawford to have surgery this week ending his season.

Look for Ortiz to be placed on the DL and perhaps not play in a Red Sox uniform again.

Look for Larry Luchinno to announce his resignation

Look for Valentine to be fired and an interim Mgr named.

Look for Beckett to be placed on waivers.

Look for more finger pointing as the rats jump ship - led by Pedroia and Gonzalez

Look for mattpaul to start third grade.

So what they are saying is Shoppach was the only Red Sox with any gonads to address this with management....HR should go down as hero in Red Sox folk lore.....

The Soap Opera continues.
If the Sox were in the Wild Card race there would be no whining. This is all the result of losing, and then looking for scapegoats to blame.
Look in the mirrow, players! Valentine doesn't take any At Bats or field any balls.

Just What The Mets Need, a Squealer in the Organization! The press is going to have a Field Day with this Guy!!! Good Luck!!

Glad the Patriots will soon be kicking off the regular season. Tired of the Red Sox. They're all to blame (except Cody Ross -- whose name sounds like he should be playing for the Wild Bill Hickochs).

Agreed, can't wait until NFL and College FB takes the Red Sox off the screen of most media types.
If the Sox don't clean house this winter, and I mean players not necessarily Valentine, then they are going to lose a lot fan support in the next few years.
If Valentine goes and they keep the whiners then it will really stir up the troops!

The majority of that team will be back I'm afraid. Valentine will be gone, and now that Brad Mills is available, he will be the new manager.
