Season likely over for Boston lightning rod

08:17 AM ET 08.20 | A dispiriting season will more than likely end without having played another game this season for Carl Crawford in Boston. The team will decide Monday whether Crawford will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. Given the words general manager Ben Cherington used on Sunday, surgery seems inevitable. Crawford could have the surgery as early as Wednesday. Dr. James Andrews, who diagnosed his injury in April, would do the surgery. "This is a real injury he's playing with and we've got to take it seriously," Cherington said. "He's been playing through an injury because the team is trying to win games. But with this decision we need to focus on what's best for Carl."

Stick a fork in him.

Might as well do it now.

It's going to be 7 - 9 months for recovery. So you know he won't be ready for the beginning of next year.

It's really a no brainer, have the surgery now and he should be ready to go on opening day 2013. He should also have a lot of confidence going into next year, as he has played very well since coming back. He has looked a lot more like the Carl Crawford they thought they were getting when they signed him to that ridiculous contract. I think he will have a very good year in 2013 when completely healthy.

Dr. Andrews claims 6-7 months for a position player.

I've heard this as well. But this is the Red Sox. Ortiz's day to day Achilles injury has kept him out a month already. What makes you think Crawfords recovery time will go by the book?

Good point, but Carl is in a little better overall condition than Big Slopi. That should help a little. If he sticks with Dr. Andrews and stays away from the Red Sox doctors, he should be fine.

Get it done now. What is the upside in waiting? Didn't management delay Shilling's, not that that really mattered.

It's really been a tough experience for Carl in Boston.

Except on the 15th and the 30th of each month.

Was he ready for the beginning of this year?

I am sure he cries every day he goes to the bank!

Buccholz had the same uncertainty regarding his injury last year. He didn't return.

It may be that everyone on this team has been mailing it in for months. The only thing certain in Boston is the uncertainty. Besides they have been throwing managers under the bus there for months.

Yep. Might as well get it over with now. The Sox aren't going anywhere this season anyway.

Schilling wanted the surgery. Management wanted him to try rehab.
