08:21 AM ET 08.21 | Not only is the Western Athletic Conference's ability to function as a football conference likely over, but it's ability to function at all has also come into question. Commissioner Jeff Hurd said Monday the emphasis has turned to finding enough schools to retain NCAA Division I recognition as a nonfootball league. ... Hurd said challenges remain for the WAC to continue, even as a nonfootball conference. It must add multiple new members for the 2013-14 school year in order to have the necessary seven for NCAA recognition. He said an answer could be coming as early as September. "If we can't get enough league members, we can't operate as a conference," Hurd said. "We're going to do everything possible to avoid that.

Super Conference realignment comments!

I think the opposite approach is needed. Conferences should make geographical sense. Travel costs are kept down and rivalries are promoted. Does anyone think that the players, students and alumni of aTm are as excited about playing USCe as they were about playing UTx? The quest for the super conference is a fool's errand.

I think that is short term thinking. Like corporate managers ONLY looking at the next quarters results. TV contracts for a few conferences look great. But if the smaller schools drop out due to costs, will their students and alums follow other schools? I'm not convinced. College football as a nation-wide event leads to ethical compromises like Penn State, tOSU, UNC, USC, and Miami.

Saw your comments yesterday about Boise beating my guys. Figured you were fishing, but work was to busy, so I didn't get a chance to bite!

Agreed but it is unfortunate that ESPN and the other networks now own college football. I have been disgusted since OU/NEB left thanksgiving weekend and now it is non-existent! It is sacrilegious if you ask me!!! Whats next?

I don't watch many non-B1G games, but I did enjoy OU vs Neb. with a plate of Thanksgiving left overs. Good memories.

If I was King of college football, I would undo most, if not all the conference expansions and realignments of the past several decades.

Well, glad they're up. I've got the day off from making cars, but I've got lots of errands to do. See you guys later.

There have been some great things that have come because of conference expansion. The SEC conference championship game and PLAYOFFS. Though the latter is the result of SEC dominance in the BCS era IMO.

Probably the 2nd best & least publicized game of the opening weekend. IMHO, it'll be a lot better than the TSUN vs Gump game. I'm looking forward to watching it.
I think you take 'em, but barely....ask UGA, they are a quality opponent.
Good luck
