Mega-deals may bite Wild in lockout

08:36 AM ET 08.21 | Ilya Kovalchuk's off-then-on multi-year mega-contract in New Jersey wound up providing teams with a blueprint for structuring the kinds of deals that would get the NHL's green light. The blueprint led to similarly structured long-term deals for players like Brad Richards, Zach Parise and Ryan Suter. But those teams could still end up paying a price for taking on long-term deals, as well as paying out the huge signing bonuses that have become increasingly common. ... Right now, all those contracts are structured in a way that makes the average salary manageable under the current salary-cap system. But under the new CBA, it's possible those deals won't be cap friendly at all and could cause serious difficulty for the Wild and several other NHL teams.

Man there have been like five stories about how the Wild will pay these guys during the lockout. Enough already

Minnesota you chased down these guys and said you won't be out bid. You can't cry poor now that you got what you wanted. Everyone new the high probability of a lockout.

I think you missed the point of the artice/post. Minnesota might be concerned with the lockout but only because they won't have a full season and will miss out on money from tickets, broadcast revenue, etc. They don't have to pay Parise and Suter during a lockout so that's not the concern. The concern is discussing the fact a new CBA could hurt the Wild in how these deals were structured. Under a new CBA it could cause a large amount of Parise and Suters contracts to use up a lot of the cap room which isn't as noticiable under the current CBA. Maybe read the article/post again and you will understand how your comment made no sense. GO WILD!

I think you missed the point from the ESPN thread. The Wild are not crying poor because they were able to pick up Parise and Suter and now have to pay them in the face of a lockout. (Remember, you don't pay players during a lockout) The Wild are likely worried about a lockout because they will lose revenue on ticket sales, broadcast revenue, etc, etc. What the article/post is stating is under a new CBA the contracts may hurt the cap space for the Wild and this may hurt them in the long run by having the two contracts take up more cap space than they had planned. Go Wild!

Don't expect any sympathy whatsoever from anybody in here .... except for the other Wild fans. All three of them.

They have to pay the bonuses, which are considerable in size.

I did not miss the point at all. They knew that a new CBA was around the corner and a lockout, meaning there was a high likely hood the revenue streams that were going to fund said contracts was not going to be there, yet they still handed out 2 large satchel of money.

Congrats GM. I haven't had anybody open an account just to tear me a new one in a while. I guess I'm not trying hard enough. ;-)
