Clearly, Collie is not going to make the most difficult decision an athlete will ever have to make by himself. So the Colts need to make it for him. They need to waive him. ... Collie is not going to do this himself. He's an athlete. He's a world-class athlete. And he's still young, and thus inclined to believe he's bulletproof despite evidence to the contrary. Except for the rarest few, athletes don't know how or when to say goodbye, especially when health intervenes on a promising career. But this makes four concussions in 22 months.

No, the colts can also put him on the IR list, to allow him to get paid and take time to recover and think this over. Waiving him simply allows him to sign with another team, which may be happy to do so, once the doctors clear him.

Y'know, the league and the players need to get together and do something about this waiver thing. Teams are waiving injured players they'd like to keep, but if they don't waive them, it costs them a roster slot. The thing the Colts really want to do here is PUP him, which still lets them put him on IR later. That would be the best thing for Collie, too. But, that costs them a roster slot for a while, and means they have to expose a healthy player they'd like to keep.

Last I heard this is supposed to be a free country. He's a grown man old enough to make his own decisions, at least for now. Give him the boot for something that may or may not happen and he could suddenly become a very wealthy man.

That's an ignorant take. The Colts don't have to pay him to sit and aren't culpable if he signs elsewhere. If they waive him, they've done their part and can have a clear conscience.

There's a difference between legal responsibility and a clear conscience. He's a young guy who was injured, and may never recover, playing for the team. Sure, they can cut him loose and wash their hands of him, but it's quite possible that he won't find another team, or he'll find one that will let him play and therefore put him at risk.
The take-the-high-road approach would be to put him on IR and pay him for a season. After that, let him go make his own way.

I know I might get blasted for saying this, but it really doesn't seem like the guy can take a hit. For example, the hit Sunday night, I believe it was by Foote, is the type of hit that happens lots of times per game somewhere on the field.
Be that as it may, he needs to find another sport or vocation. There is no way to avoid those hits as a WR in the NFL no matter how "safe" they make the game.
