Disappointment after Hartnell left millions on table

08:20 AM ET 08.22 | No good deed goes unpunished, apparently. Not everyone is happy with Scott Hartnell's new six-year, $28.5 million contract extension. Some agents feel he sold himself well short of pending free agency after the 2012-13 season. "Everyone is asking what the [bleep] he just did," said one agent. ... He also got a limited no-movement clause, which is no small matter for any player in his late 30s, which he will be at the end of this deal. Yet he could have gotten at least $5.5 million and likely more in free agency next summer with a decent year. As a player rep, who is part of the negotiating committee on the next CBA, you can imagine his fellow members of the NHLPA probably aren't too happy, either.

What would he have gotten if he had an 'off year' This is meaningless drivel. How 'bout we let the player have at least as much input into his contract as the agent? And Scott, if you ever have dinner with Don Fehr, let him pick up the tab.

agree...some players out there are feeling pretty good with their income...what's the problem with that...oh yea, agent makes less money.....oh well.....maybe he wanted to keep ticket prices down.....need more of that mind set......good for Hartnell....

He is getting $4.75 million a year and the NHLPA thought he could have gotten $5.5 million a year. Like Slappy said if he had a mediocre year what would he get. Somehow I think Scotty will be able to get by without that extra $800,000.

I agree. I hate agents...Bettman and his ilk have done what they have done to ruin sports, but I would not mind one moment to see Scott Boras and HIS ilk on the business end of a shooting gallery

You're right. The weeks don't get much worse than that. As far as Hartnell though, he's now making a hundred a week more than me. So pffffft to him! (and the anonymous agent.

Wasnt even his agent was it? These guys are like players at a blackjack table, they hate Hartnell for playing his hand the way he wanted instead of helping them get more money...

A guy like Hartnell, as it is, probably could've gotten $6 mil+ on the open market. The brass at the PA and the agents are surely a little bitter. Even from Hartnell's perspective, though, doesn't he feel a little hard done by when the team is paying a crap goalie a truckload of money? Just offered the world to a defenceman who had never won anything in his NHL career? Will probably give as much as they can to Giroux and Couturier and are still giving money to Chris Pronger?
Or was this part of the bargain when they sent the guy who screwed his wife to Columbus?

Maybe it works like with the guy who has a 40 hour work week who routinely takes 1 in 10 days off sick and gets more or less the same take home pay....
I applaud Hartnell.

exactly. I remember when Jared Weaver signed, and caught hell for the same thing (though a LOT more $)
He said why would I sign for more than I need/ My family is set for generations" admirable in a way. Very un-American though, to not take EVERY LAST DOLLAR YOU CAN GET!!!!!!

interesting...but maybe he was just thinking what HE needs, and that what someone else gets matters not at all
