Raiders OC compares McFadden to Foster, Dunn

08:06 AM ET 08.23 | Darren McFadden may not look the part, but he's Oakland's between-the-tackles, short-yardage guy. [Twice on the Arizona 1-yard line] Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Knapp called for [McFadden] to pound the ball up the middle. And twice McFadden was stopped for no gain. No matter to Knapp. "I've always had a belief that the No. 1 back can still be the goal-line back, doesn't have to necessarily be a bigger, stronger guy," said Knapp. ... "My experience tells me so, last couple years it was Arian Foster (who) had a lot of success. Warrick Dunn was one the best inside-tackle runners I've ever been around as a coach. It's not just the back that requires the execution of the play. So it didn't bother me to have him in there."

There is a reason NFL teams call on a big guy in goal line situations. It's physics. The mass really counts.

It's harder to stop a bus, or a refrigerator on the goal line than a smallish back. F = Mass X Acceleration...

Well-chosen massive examples, I must say.

You beat me to it...Emmitt Smith wasnt the biggest guy but I believe he is the all time leader...its called an offensive line. If that was the case Christain Okoye, Kevin Mack and guys like that would have lead the league in TDs....man did I just show my age with those references? smh

Quickness and vision is probably more useful than mass on the goal line. I often see big guys try to bull through a mass of bodies rather than look for the gap and shoot through. The problem with McFadden is he'll probably pull a hamstring walking into Starbucks.

You either have the skill of a red zone runner or you don't, Emmitt, Lt, priest Holmes, were all very good!! Of course having that big Fat Mobile offensive doesn't hurt!!! Marcus Allen was awesome and not a Huge Back!

The game has change a lot since Jim Brown and others. Dunn was a special back, but today the way the game has change you do need that big blocking back to lead the way, or a back who can go over the top.

If that's your plan, Knapp. DMC will be out by week 11.
Nothing wrong with having a 3rd down power back to do the work. DMC's strength is seeing the hole and making people miss.
