Hottest seat in the NFL

08:07 AM ET 08.23 | Change is a constant in the NFL, where seven teams will open with new coaches 2012, and job security is tenuous for coaches such as Norv Turner. The Chargers coach almost lost his job after finishing 8-8 last season, but team president Dean Spanos opted to give it one more try with Turner and general manager A.J. Smith. San Diego is 52-34 since Turner took over in 2007 but has gone 17-15 in the past two seasons and has only three playoff wins despite having had one of the better rosters in the NFL. The players went to bat for Turner after last season, and it worked. They'll have to do it again this season by making the playoffs. ... Another 8-8 season and Turner -- and probably Smith -- will be gone.

As it is every season yet he remains. HA!

Over Turner's 5-year tenure, can you think of another NFL team with this much talent which underachieves quite as spectacularly?

August 23, 2012  08:28 AM ET

Is it me or does this team just never seem to have that special chemistry to win games? Statistically they're all good, but they never seem to have that bond that teams like the Giants, Packers, or Steelers have.

Gotta feel bad for Rivers. In the same draft as Eli and Big Ben, who each have 2 SB rings, and Ben having played for a 3rd.

Don't be so hard on yourself. Really, it's not your fault. I know, you feel you should be doing more to support the Chargers, but they must bear the responsibility of sucking big-time in games that count. Divine Providence put them in one of the weakest divisions in the NFL, and still they end up on the golf course in early January.

It's not you.

I would think the fat boys; Ryan and Reid are squirming on the chairs a bit also...

Lots of talent, potential, and hype, but underachieving.

This is exactly what the Bengals might turn into, if they're not careful over the next few years.

apparently, the hottest seat in the NFL is a bench outside cowboys stadium....you can get 3rd degree burns while sitting on it...

No. And Smith and Turner should have been gone last year. Except for Rivers, the team was not prepared to compete most of the season and that's Turner's fault. As it is, it's going to take time to put things back together anyway and Rivers isn't getting any younger.

Last 2 season they had a lot injuries....the guy is 18 games over .500 as coach....most organizations would give up their first born to be that succesful ....I say they will bounce back quite nicely this year...

but only if one is stupid and decides to plant their double wide butt on said bench in August in the heat of Dallas. Interesting lawsuit that should get thrown out like yesterdays garbage.

Thats all any ofnus have really heard about the AFC West for the past 6-7 years. The end result is always the same yet there will be several alleged sports writers and experts picking them to play in the Super Bowl. Common theme to their stories will be the health of Gates. Watch out world he's finally healthy. In the past 2 years they have lost Sproles Tolbert and V Jax. Sproles was replaced by Mr Glass and The Lord of No Rings is banking on Gates being healthy all year. I'm not a GM but how is that a reciepe for success?

And to think - they canned Schottenheimer for this?

If Peyton Manning does his job in Denver for a few years, and I think he will, the window for San Diego is closed.

No. I doubt anyone can. Not possible.

I guess he shouldn't have lost those two games that regular season.
