Terrible slumps at terrible time for Braves

08:12 AM ET 08.23 | Brian McCann, to the tune of batting well below .200 and with a single RBI in the month, has scuffled his way through the month of August. Same deal with [Dan Uggla]. ... Since his three-hit game to help the Braves and Tim Hudson rally in Philadelphia on Aug. 8, Uggla is 6-for-38 (.158). Just when it looks like he's about to take off again -- most recently with his stretch of 12 RBIs in 11 games -- he gets back into a rut. Uggla is hitting only .208 on the season now, which is last in the National League among qualified regulars. The only every day players doing worse are over in the American League: Seattle's Justin Smoak (.191), Tampa's Carloa Pena (.194) and Chicago's Adam Dunn (.206).

Freeman's been in a bit of a funk too lately. Very poor timing indeed.

Uggla and McCann were both on the bench for last night's game. Uggla came in to PH in the 8th and promptly struck out on 3 pitches. McCann's shoulder is bothering him but he won't admit it.
watching the two of them over the last couple of weeks has been difficult...it's all or nothing. no real approach at the plate, just swing for the fence and hope you connect (which they didn't). and Uggla is in the top 3 in walks...go figure.

Dan is uppercut and pull happy. Everything, even the high ones, he is uppercutting trying to lift the ball out of the park. I wish someone could get through to him to swing level and try to drive the ball to right field. He has enough power to hit it out everywhere but he tries to pull every pitch.
McCann should have his butt kicked for NOT using the left side of the infield when teams put the exaggerated shift on. If he would slap some singles or even bunt his way on to the left side teams would not cheat so often on their setup.
Instead, he hits hard into the defense most of the time.

Well, if they'd all been in a slump EARLIER in the season, they wouldn't be within shouting distance of the Nats NOW. Slumps happen throughout the season. Good teams make hay while the sun shines so they can survive the slumps.

McCann and Uggla have pretty much struggled all season, they've both had a few hot streaks, but for the most part, both have struggled. That and carrying a weak hitting SS until Simmons gets back will lead to some low scoring games. Unless Uggla and McCann pick it up, we can't afford for guys like Chipper, heyward, Freeman, Prado or Bourn to have a bad week.

It seems like the paper is in panic mode instead of the players. They will never forget last year give away to STL, but with their slump they are not in that bad of a shape leading the wild card race with six weeks to go.

Uggla had a ton of promise when he first came up...
But like Nate Mclouth - he's found Atlanta vexing :-)
And let's here it for Ike Davis... I fully expected to see him on the list down bottom - but he's been climbing above the Mendoza line for the past 6 weeks.

Maybe they could get some help for the Cubbies' batting instructor, James Rowson. He has the Cubbies hitting very well since he replaced Rudy Jaramillo.

I'd personally thank the Braves for taking Freddi Gonzales and Uggla off our hands. In exchange, we received Dunn and Infante. Dunn is a very good reliever and Omar was a gem whom we got value for when we traded him to Detroit. Braves "Way" overpaid for Uggla. Nice guy, but still just refused to move to another position because his value as a HR hitting 2B were much higher than than an outfielder or 3B player. Didn't matter about his defense or age. So, you have an average 3B or slightly below avg HR hitting, .220 hitting outfielder playing 2nd base being paid 5 yrs at $62M.... Brilliant.... Did anybody watch him play over his last year for the Marlins? BTW, why doesn't someone ask Chipper for a blood sample?
