08:03 AM ET 08.24 | The Lions appear to be moving in the direction of opening the season with running back Jahvid Best on the physically unable to perform list. "Particularly with concussions, time is always beneficial," coach Jim Schwartz said after practice Thursday. "We have seen that with a lot of guys who have come back. This would buy us time if we had to cross that hurdle." Best continues to work out on his own. "He's doing great," Schwartz said. "He's working out hard. He's just not been cleared." The Lions have until Aug. 31 to decide whether to start Best on PUP. If they do, he would have to sit out at least the first six weeks of the regular season. Meanwhile, Mikel Leshoure remains on track to play at Oakland Saturday.

He may never play another down. And maybe he shouldn't.

I was reading where Pop Warner football is limiting contact in practice. I think the next big story, which will start small, will be high schools one by one dropping football programs, both to save money and to reduce injuries and potential liability. Once the talent pool starts to dry up, well, what's going to happen to this sport?

I wish him well, look how long it took Sidney Crosby of the Penguins to get cleared to play again. He might not return.

A fully-recovered Sidney Crosby would be great for hockey. Of course, a 2012-2013 season would be great for hockey, too.

He was a heckuva back at Cal.......1st round talent for sure. But the NFL is a different world. Although he did get "nicked up" in college too....Lions should have taken that into consideration cuz there is no way this guy can stay healthy, I'm sorry to say......

So I take it he doesn't have a 'best before' date attached to him

Talent pool will never dry up because the NFL will always be an avenue, of out of poverty for many minorities; haven't you heard? The league is close to 80 percent african-american players now.

Middle class parents might talk their kids out of playing football, but the working poor don't have that luxury.

It will be filled by Canadians who became disinterested in hockey after the 2012 lockout

The talent will all move to Texas. Football will never go away down here.

Yes, he had a hellacious head related injury at Cal. Great back, great speed. Durability, not so good.

Down in my neck of the woods this week a young man was kill at high school football practice. I agree that some serious injuries do occur in this sport. But across America every Friday night during the fall in small cities football is the way of life, and it will never change.

Up here, a kid got hit in the chest with a line drive, pitching in Little League. It was a freak thing, but the impact stopped his heart, he went into cardiac arrest, and by the time they got his heart going again he suffered irreparable brain damage. His parents are suing Little League, the bat manufacturer and even the store where the bat was purchased.

Unfortunately, it's going to be the liability that starts killing sports. What's a school district going to do when their insurer wants a hundred thousand a year to cover sports liability?

Yeah, the middle-class programs will be dropped to protect the kids, but the city schools will drop football to cut their insurance costs.

Detroit has had some bad injuries, Chuck Hughes, Mike Utley. I hope he sees the writing on the wall and retires.

I'm sure Best will go back and play when given the chance. If he receives another concussion he should step down or the NFL should forcefully ban him from the NFL for his own good.

I think you will see it go the way of soccer and baseball. Private leagues for money not affiliated with a school.I don't really see it going away.

Just dump him he is only takeing up a spot that someone else could take.

What happened to the kid is tragic. What the parents are doing is typical. I'm surprised they're not suing the kid who hit the line drive.

Put him on the All PUP team. "Starting at running back, Jahvid Best and Darren McFadden! At wide receiver, Austin Collie!...."

They may be. I only had a partial list.
