08:04 AM ET 08.24 | To be sure, Maurice Jones-Drew and his new boss aren't off to the best of starts. Jones-Drew offered a glimmer of hope Thursday before an appearance at Fiat of Orange Park, stating that "we're not there yet" when asked if he might extend his holdout past the first regular-season game at Minnesota on Sept. 9. "We're moving forward to doing something. It's day-by-day. I hope we can get something done," he said during a 12-minute conversation with the Times-Union and two area TV stations. ... Jones-Drew admitted that he didn't think his holdout would last this long. "I didn't think it would get to this point, from where it started," he said. Jones-Drew said he has not requested a trade.

He has no leverage, especially at fines of $30,000/day, he probably thought Khan would be a pushover, not Genghis Khan!

The fines are not mandatory, and collecting them is at the discretion of the team. So, the player can say he'll come back if they waive the fines. Or, the team can tell him to pay up before he can suit up.
But, you just know he's going to pull up lame with a hamstring pull because he hasn't been in training camp, don't you?

That's what usually happens. I like the Steelers (and Patriots) way of handling these things...

This whole thing feels like C2J all over again.

It does. Even if he ends the holdout right now, MJD is going to be a non-factor this season, which will just make the team less likely to give him any sort of new contract.

After watching the home town team get beaten down by the Ravens last night, I think everyone is sitting out. Flaco had fun...

You would think by now players would see the holdout thing is an awful idea. But they just keep doing it.

MJD has OUTPLAYED his old contract and deserves a new one.

But think about it.....Everything worked out well for C2J because the bottom line is that these are professional players and they are PAID to PLAY. Not paid to placate the media or fans.
And that's that.

Everyone stop whining and complaining everytime a player want a raise. He has every right to ask for one just like anyone has the right to ask for a pay increase at his or her job.
Besides, the contracts are a joke because the teams don't have to honor the entire contract. A player can have a 5 year deal and get cut after 2 years and he doesn't receive anything else.
it's a zero sum game, so quit your whining.

Difference - CJ2K was working under his rookie contract.
MJD is on his 2nd one... The one he negotiated.
He needs to shut up and come in to play.

Exactly...I think we all can understand these tactics in the final year of the deal but with 2 years left? He needs to ball out this year then they will break him off next year before his contract expires. This is T.O.-esque...and far from CJ2K situation bc he was playing out his rookie contract still. MJD got paid a ton of up front money in this deal so he knew this was going to happen over the last cpl yrs of it

He is getting $9 million total for 2 more years. Then he will be 29. From Jax's side, why in the world would they hit their future cap with crazy money going to a 30 year old RB that is undersized and will be worn down if trend holds form on RB's. They have a lot more pressing issues to deal with than to overpay this guy. Is giving in to his contract demands going to get them from a habitual 5-11 team to a 11-5 team. Of course not! He might be the difference in making them a .500 team, which is the worst thing a team can be. I would tell him to play his contract, and be done with it.

Not quite as futile as "getting weapons for Tebow," but it's close.
