08:11 AM ET 08.24 | There's one thing missing on the mantle of 38-year-old Derek Jeter's remarkable career: an MVP trophy. Buzz has been building in recent weeks that Jeter could finally capture his first MVP award this season, a possibility furthered by a Chicago columnist who suggested this week that he would vote for the shortstop if given the chance. Does Jeter think he's having a season worthy of such an honor? "Come on, man; I'm not thinking about that," Jeter said. "We're trying to win a game." Jeter has had one near-miss in MVP voting, finishing a close second to Justin Morneau in 2006. He also finished third in 1998 and 2009, but ... the AL MVP award remains an elusive prize for the 13-time All-Star.

If he got it, it would be like all those gold gloves he was awarded but didn't deserve.

Jeter has been durable throughout his professional career. He hasn't missed a lot of games.

past two years have been hard on him and he has missed more than a few games the past couple of years ... but again ... the issue is ... he's not the MVP

If he was a great defensive shortstop and was putting up the numbers he has and his team wins the division ( not looking good right now), then you could at least make the argument for MVP. But he is a very average SS, so that is that.

Most likely. But that's not what we are discussing here.

He's a first ballot HOF'r.

Absolutely. But he ain't no MVP. He's not even the MVP of his team.

The pharmacist.

Who's the MVP of the Yankees this season?

Cano. Better OBP, ahead of Jeter in every important stat save avg. His fielding's been great. The argument's there for Jeter, but Cano has been far more important to run production. He's tailed off this month, but there's an argument to be made that he's been hurt.
