08:18 AM ET 08.24 | Brian Kelly has made official what many had anticipated for weeks -- that sophomore Everett Golson would start against Navy on Sept. 1. "Lots of practice, lots of film, lots of evaluation," Kelly said of what led him to this decision. "He won the job. He made great improvement. "It was a tough decision, but Everett clearly won the starting job. If things go the way we're planning it, he'll play the whole game." And the whole season? Fans with sticky memories will remember Kelly proclaiming since-departed QB Dayne Crist as his short- and long-term option at quarterback just before last season's opener, then reversing field 30 minutes into an eventual season-opening loss to South Florida.

Navy, Purdue, then Michigan State. If Kelly is still experimenting with QBs going into the Michigan State game then they'll have problems.

Kelly went to the Steve Spurrier School of Quarterback Coaching. That's where he learned the quick hook move, no doubt. But overall, if he gets results that are at least similar to SOS, over the long haul ND should be plenty happy.

Navy? Purdue? I thought the Irish schedule didn't have any of these?

Hey, that's better than playing Wyoming or Towson or a directional school in another state.

Very true. I was just under the impression that every week was an OU/USC/Sparty type opponent. Never really looked closely.

The Irish play the toughest schedule in the country season after season,, now if you want to point out a weak schedule just look further north to Boise.
Probably be the one time I ever root for Sparty,, I am sick of Boise st getting a free ride to a BCS bowl game.

Yeah ND plays a touch schedule.
Mich St. and Michigan back-to-back
Miami, Stanford, BYU and OU back-to-back-to back
and they end the season at USC.
