08:19 AM ET 08.24 | We may soon know Plan B. The Detroit Red Wings could be close to signing free-agent defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo. A source told MLive.com that the Red Wings have made a two-year offer for about $2.5 million a season. Colaiacovo, 29, is a good skater and puck-mover with some offensive ability, having averaged 27 points a season the past four years with the St. Louis Blues. He shoots left and can play the point on the power play. His biggest issue has been his health. He hasn't played more than 67 games in any season. Colaiacovo (6-1, 200) isn't the top-pair defenseman the Red Wings were seeking after losing Nicklas Lidstrom (retirement) and Brad Stuart (signed with San Jose), but he is one of the few viable options remaining.

Im surprised his career has lasted this long. Had a few bleak years.

Don't these guys have another picture of this guy? This "Who took their skates off?" shot is getting to be like Torts' "read between the lines" picture

If any team can turn the guys career around its Detroit.

Who needs him? We have Jonas Gustavsson.

Burgh Lidstrom's gone and so is the Wing dynasty I know it seems like it lasted as long as the Ming Dynasty but it came short by a few centuries

I'm just saying that Detroit is the kind of team that everyone seems to play better on. I'm not saying that Johnny Shortside is going to win the Vezina next year, but I'll bet he plays better than when he was with the Leafs. (OK, sure bet, but you know what I mean.) This kid will probably work out for them too.

I got up and stepped in cat vomit. We were out of coffee and it looks like rain.

My Friday was going quite well until I read this. :-(

Were you under the impression Detroit has yet to reveal Plan A? ;-)

Sorry Wings fans...looks like you're morphing back to the time of pre-Stevie Y and Co.

I just hope Carlo is nice to Sonny's sister or he's in real trouble.

Do I sense some skepticism on Red Wings fan's part re: Jonas? He'll still outperform Leighton.

I'm looking forward to watching "Coca" Cola (provided there is a season with games to watch). I don't think the Wings are going to be the dredge they were a quarter century ago, but neither will they be the wrold beaters they were ten years ago.

That was a historically bad era, there's no way they fall to that level. I mean that was just awful. You would have to think that the Red Wings are as bad or worse than the Blue Jackets to fit with what you said.

Ah, it's alright, Lidstrom wasn't that great (greatest defenseman ever). The Wings will be fine (really worried about how they'll look). There's nothing to worry about (please call for help!).

Once Z and Pavel D ride off into the sunset the cupboard will soon be bare...please tell me who they have to fill the gaps.

Not that there's anything wrong with that
