The commish meant this as a compliment, of course. An honest reading of this beauty is more like: "If you fans weren't such doormats, I might be worried." The skin crawled here at the head office of Usual Suspects when Bettman trotted out this PR gem. Fans as doormat. The comment assumes that the customers are with him, not with the players. The fans are extraneous. He will act with impunity. Now, all of this may be true. But you don't say that. At least, not to a bank of microphones and TV cameras. Not after you promised the last time that your snappy business plan would lower ticket prices.

No fan has been with Gary since he helped David Stern rig the 1985 NBA Draft and send Patrick Ewing to the Knicks. And Knicks fans still don't have anything to show for that. You are scum. I read an article yesterday and it asked why Pittsburgh fans boo Bettman after he saved the team from Basille and rigged the draft for Crosby. I thought it was an intersting question.

You really is is just the dummy right. And that owners like Snider (and others) are the ventriloquist with their hands up his back side making him speak.
Sure he doesn't need to be so smug, but the fact is he is just doing what the owners want him to do. He works for them, not the actual game itself. It would be nice if the league had a figure head who wasn't working for the players or the owners, and was just looking out for the game itself. But it doesn't.

But I do know this. It's why they keep giving him new contracts. But given how often the owners apparently get themselves in trouble it's safe to assume they aren't the brightest bunch either.

Actually I don't think most Pens fans realize what all went on behind the scenes when we got Sid. They also see Mario as the savior rather than the Buttgoblin. Me, I still have a bad taste in my mouth for the way that Mario pretended (?) that he was taking the Pens to Kansas City. Talk about using the fans as doormats.

Danny with I'm not disagreeing with a lot of what you say. I have to ask what true hockey markets have been robbed of their teams. He played a big part in keeping the franchises in Nashvville Pitts and Edmonton.
