10:38 AM ET 08.25 | The Falcons and the Georgia World Congress Center Authority are getting close to reaching a deal on a proposed new open air stadium. Chances are high that the stadium will require more state money to make it happen and Georgia State Representative Mike Dudgeon (R-Johns Creek) is saying no way. "I oppose this because I don't think it's the appropriate use of taxpayer money to finance stadiums for the NFL and for the Falcons," he said. Right now it's looking like a new stadium with a retractable roof could cost up to $948 million. The Falcons would commit $700 million and the Georgia World Congress Center Authority would have to provide the rest.

Please note that the stadium would be built to accommodate other events besides football and most conventions, NCAA Basket ball events (regional /Final Fours), probably do not want to their event in a open stadium with a possibility of rain / col weather, etc... Nor would the SEC, ACC or BCS championship games want to play in 30 degree weather either.

My gosh. Weather games is part of what built the NFL! They want a new stadium? The Falcons and the NFL should pay for the whole thing.....by using money they are already taking from the fans! We pay for it every day of our lives!

Know what? I "want" a new truck. Economically not a smart choice and I really do not "need" a new truck soooooooo I am not buying a new truck. This stuff has to stop. Sports are way out of line. Far too important in our society. Almost a billion $$$$$$$$. No, stop the madness.

In this article there was no mention of the Georgia Dome. I am sure my now it is paid for and has those luxury boxes and suites. The SEC uses the Dome a lot as well as the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. My question is if the new stadium is built what happens to an empty Georgia Dome.

The Georgia Dome is not that old. I saw it being built. It open in '92 or '93. They do not need another new football stadium. They are just trying to keep up with the Jones' (Jerry Jones).

Really ? How deep is your frost line there? When I have been there it seems the ground never freezes

August 26, 2012  06:20 PM ET

This is ridiculous. The Georgia Dome is a mere 20 years old and they want a new stadium? Why? It was built in 1992. It could use an update but a whole new stadium? If the Atlanta Falcons, the SEC, the NCAA and whomever else uses the Georgia with frequency are willing to fund a new stadium, why don't they invest in an upgrade and revitalize the dilapidated surroundings in northwest Atlanta, where the Georgia Dome is located. It's a drug infested dookie hole and would never be caught walking through there. Sad thing is if they do approve building a new stadium for the Falcons, the Atlanta Braves will want a new stadium too. Their stadium isn't that old either.

At one point they were talking about having two stadiums coexisting. (Yes, ridiculous.) But, I think "sanity" has prevailed and they will tear the Dome down.
