Red Sox defend Josh Beckett's clubhouse role

09:42 AM ET 08.26 | While Red Sox GM Ben Cherington and manager Bobby Valentine were careful not to implicate any of the California-bound players, Valentine admitted change was needed in the clubhouse. The Sox players always have downplayed the notion of a troubled clubhouse. Though Josh Beckett became reviled by much of the public, he remained the respected leader of the pitching staff. "I definitely think he was portrayed in the wrong way," starting pitcher Clay Buchholz said. "People make mistakes. He'd be the first to admit if he did something wrong. Being in a clubhouse where a lot of negative stuff has happened over the course of a season, there's fingers that have to be pointed, and obviously people think of him as one of the main guys on this team, so a lot of stuff is pointed in his direction."

Is that "role" or did they mean "roll." As in, I had a dinner roll with that fried chicken and beer.

Have to give the Red Sox credit, it was all a bold move. But when a payroll like they had misses the play offs three strait years, then you need to do something big. And they did.

Josh must've given Clay the coldest beer in the cooler and offered him first dibs in the chicken bucket...

He was outflanked. ESPN reported "Pitcher John Lackey already had claimed Beckett's locker "

Think I read they sent $11 million to the dodgers.

I heard 5% of the $271M owed to the 3 players, so about 13.5M.

I think they did alright, Beckett sucks, but IMO Agone and Crawford will play very well out there.

Apparently money is not an issue out there.

No he's not Poulos, but when he's on he's not that far away. Plus he also makes $100M less than Albert. Crawford will be all fixed and ready to go by opening day. His style of play is made foe the NL. Would not surprise me one bit to see both of them in the All Star game next year.

Think you are right . Guys like those two are not easy to find and never come cheap. Crawford did not come close to expectations in Boston, but he is a talent, and nobody lights it up when they are injured.
It will not be easy or come cheap for the Red Sox to replace either of them, and pitching on the FA market is roll of the dice.

I know people are spinning this trade as a big risk for the Dodgers, but I don't think so. Gonzo is gonna be a beast in LA. Beckett is still a good pitcher that needed a trade; now he's in a pitcher's park in a pitcher's division. And Crawford...he will respond next year in a big way. Wait and see.
Boston wins too. Clears the clubhouse, clears the payroll, and gives them a chance to start over.

Most of the Red Sox fans I know are happy with the trade. They never thought they could find somebody to take Beckett's contract...but Beckett AND Crawford? They would of given up more than Gonzalez to do that.

I think that's eaier said than done. The Sox will have a hard time siging any big time free agents since they've shown that they have no problem not living up to a contract now. And as much as the leaving players said the right things in tahnking Red Sox nation you know that this will leave a bad taste for all three of them and if any potential free agent asks about their time in Boston they won't be giving glowing reports about the biased media and fans that boo the 1st week of the season. I think it was funny watching the pre game show yesterday on how the Sox will be able to re-sign Ortiz and Ellsbury but I don't think that will be very easy because it's going to take some time before the Sox are contenders again and Ortiz just doesn't have that much time to wait. Ellsbury is a Boras client and even though there are reports that he wants to stay the local media and fans didn't treat him all that well during his 1st injury when they questioned his desire to play.
This must really feel like going from being on death row to winning the lottery for Agonz, Crawford and Beckett.
