Should Bears cut Brian Urlacher?

09:58 AM ET 08.26 | Brian Urlacher may be the heart of the Bears, but if the pump in the middle of the machine is busted, you either fix it or get a new one. Urlacher just needs more time to rehab his injured left knee. He'll be fine by the season opener, 14 days from now, at Soldier Field against the Indianapolis Colts. That's what Urlacher has been saying. That's what coach Lovie Smith has been saying. That's what teammates have been saying. But how do they know? They don't. And here's the thing. The Bears have to decide no more than 13 days from now -- the Saturday before that opener -- if Urlacher is all that he's supposed to be, all that he once was, or at least a good-enough replica of his eight-time Pro Bowl self that he can hold down his expensive spot in the middle. That Saturday, Sept. 8, is the last day the Bears could release Urlacher and be off the hook for his $7.5 million 2012 salary. Keep him until Sunday and they owe him everything. But $7.5 million is a lot of cap space. It's money that can't go to free agents. It's money that can't be used to tie up quarterback Jay Cutler for more years.

Cut him. If you can fix some of that OL with other teams cuts, then do it. If not? Well, jeesh, you resign him for less. Nobody else wants him not knowing his health. Not hard to figure out, not hard at all.

He'll never be the same player he was.....not saying he's gonna be a bad player ...just not the impact guy the Bears laid out $7.5mil for.....

You probably can't fix the O-line at this point. There aren't any players out there being cut who would be much of an improvement over what's already there (even for the Bears). They have to run with what they brung, which means that Cutler will get hurt again.
Cutting Urlacher is a tough step. You'd like to think he would get the chance to retire a Bear, but it looks like he's convinced he can play beyond the time his body can withstand the pounding of the game.

That was nasty looking. Hate to see it happen to anyone. Did you hear Big Ben ripping playing Field Turf after the game? You can't remove knee injuries from the game, but maybe they could do something about playing on a surface that doesn't guarantee knee injuries.

Really, what is Urlacher suppose to say at this point? " My knee is still a mess , no way will I be much good this year so keep the $7.5 million?"

Here's the rub: if you do cut him, who do you replace him with at this point? I would think the time to decide to move on from a 12 year vet who has had injury issues would have been the draft or the start of free agency and not two weeks before you are on the hook for $7.5 million.

Ben is an idiot. I've not heard anyone else biitchin about "Field Turf" and the reason is that it's an excellent product. It has all the long lasting, low maintenance qualities of astro-turf while at the same time retain the playing characteristics and "give" of real grass.

At this point, the Bears are slightly better than the Vikings. Management hasn't been great in years. Cutler is still being considered the savior and has proven nothing. Urlacher is still their best option in the middle. The O Line offers up as much protection as a slice of swiss cheese. They have a coach who would rather stick with the status quo than make bold moves (still puzzled by "Rex is our Quarterback.")
Rebuilding is the operative word in Chicago. They started in January by getting rid of Angelo and hiring new GM Emery. They should have taken steps during the draft. Give them a year to evaluate and then lots of offseason work to become competitive again. I expect this to be Urlacher's gimme year and an opportunity to rework his contract and stay on as the mentor for the youth movement.

Not just any girl either. Anyone that says she's getting old must not have reached 30 yet because I'd gladly be hitting the waiver wires for her if I could afford to.
