08:03 AM ET 08.27 | Browns coach Pat Shurmur is singing a new tune that might just be music to a QB's ears. [Shurmur] sounds like he's leaning toward keeping quarterback Colt McCoy as his backup. Before practice on Sunday, he praised McCoy effusively -- the most positive comments he's made about him all preseason. "I think he's done an outstanding job here in training camp," said Shurmur. "I'm very pleased with where he's at. I gained an even greater appreciation of him, the way he's competed, the way he's handled the situation, let's just call it that." ... It's evident that the game has slowed down for McCoy and that he's making quicker decisions. He's also scrambled out of trouble on plenty of occasions this preseason and shown his athleticism.

Good for McCoy... Continuing to be a professional.

Will that make Seneca Wallace a Green Bay Packer?

Or is Shurmur just trying to talk up the trade value of McCoy? If it really was an open competition I think he's been holding his own against Weeden and his ability to use his feet to make plays is probably an advantage that the Browns need and Weeden doesn't have. But it's never been an open competition.

Welcome to your new role as official clipboard holder and most popular guy on the team. Congratulations.

It would be best for him to be in another uniform.

Sounds like Shumar is hedging his bets for if and when Weeden stumbles...

I know that rebuilding the Browns was a difficult task for Mike Holmgren but I am not seeing any lights at the end of the tunnel.

On a positive vein, he won't get hurt.

I am, I can see Gordon going for 120 and 2 td's in the opener. And if Richardson is healthy, we'll see what he can do. And I think I will be taking Jordan Cameron in the later rounds in my fantasy draft as a sleeper. Just so you know.

True. And when you consider the sad shape he left the Seahawks in, you have to wonder.

Some guys are not cut out to be GMs, but want it because of the prestige and power (I guess). More credit that you deserve if your team wins, with half the work; less discredit than the coach if the team loses - with half the work. Pretty sweet.

Why are you blaming Shurmur??? Holmgren runs the show!!!!

Hopefully the light at the end of the tunnel will be new owner Jimmy Haslam. At least he's a football fan, unlike the previous owner Randy Lerner.

Start him! It is obvious that Weeden is not ready to start. Look what McCoy has done with the second stringers, imagine what he could do with starters! For once Cleveland do the right thing.

Yeah - you have to hope he has some insights into who he wants to bring in to run the team.

Still sucks, though - another demolition.

If I were Colt I'd keep a good face on it, hold the clip board whatever they ask. Then when Weeden gets his legs ripped off and they ask you to play tell em no.

The Cards need two, three QBs.

Haslam might be the light, but I personally will not support an owner who has stated to be a Stealers fan forever. If you are a Stealers fan, you are not a Browns fan. This is like asking a convicted D.C. drug felon mayor to make drug dealing crime his highest priority (I know these are not related, just trying to use a parallel)

Ya got that right. Hopefully this Browns rebuilding process actually work though.
