Surprise standout in St. Louis earns 'elite' praise

08:13 AM ET 08.27 | In the words of Dusty Baker, Allen Craig is "killing it" these days for St. Louis, and it's hard to argue. Twenty players in the NL have at least 20 homers this season, and only one has fewer at-bats than Craig's 327. Twenty-two players in the NL have at least 70 RBIs, but Craig, at 71, is the only one with fewer than 349 at-bats. Since Lance Berkman went on the disabled list Aug. 3 and Craig became a fixture in the lineup, he's hit .384 with five homers, 17 RBIs and a 13-game hitting streak. ... "I'm sure Allen has caught people's attention with the way he's swinging the bat," [Matt Holliday] said. "I think he's becoming one of the elite middle-of-the-order hitters in the National League. I think he's had that potential. He is that now."

Craig is only a surprise to those who get their baseball information from ESPN.

No kidding ... He's hit at every level of pro ball; it was just a matter of time before he got his chance in the big leagues. The biggest issue for him is staying healthy.

The Cards are starting to make a move...

Any team in the post season should fear them...especially with that offense.

I have been saying all along that if Wainright would pitch like what we are used to seeing from him that this could be a scary team.

Did I just see alacran limit himself to one post?

The end is definitely near...

After the World Series last year, nobody should be surprised by Allen Craig. Slickric is right though, both Craig and David Freese are no strangers to the DL. In Freese's case that is because he's prone to the freak accident. In Craig's case he, like Jimmy Edmonds, he only has one gear... "full tilt!"

Probably lost his wifi - stay tuned.....

Once again the media give the St. Louis Cardinals absolutely no respect. But then why should they? After all the Cardinals are only the World Champions (And they will still be the world champs till someone takes that title away)

This can't be good...

He was a very pleasant surprise last year. I don't think he was much of a surprise this year.

August 27, 2012  06:04 PM ET

I posted that at 7:30 this morning and walked away from the computer. I come back at 5:00 pm and see I just posted it.

3 World Series in 8 years and won 2 of them. Bottom line. Even if ESPN sux The Red Sox so hard they look like 3 dollar hookers.

August 27, 2012  09:39 PM ET

Craig is the one guy all teams ask for when they make trade proposals to the Cards.

Eli's Elite!!!

Not a surprise to anyone outside of STL...we don't win the WS without him last year. health is the only question and he's answered that. he doesn't have the nagging injuries. just like freese, they have run into some freak type injuries and they should be ok. only the best of the best are geting rbi and hr at the rate of craig this year, if he hadn't missed a month and half he would among the league leaders in most every offensive category.
