Mariota gives Oregon's offense a higher gear

08:18 AM ET 08.27 | With a recent run of high-octane offenses, one weakness may have been the lack of a quarterback who could both run and pass at an elite level. At the risk of further inflating the already lofty expectations surrounding redshirt freshman quarterback Marcus Mariota -- named the starter on Friday -- and marginalizing the efforts of his predecessors, it can safely be said that the lack of an ideal dual-threat quarterback has prevented Oregon's no-huddle, spread-option attack from reaching its full potential. ... [Mariota's] abilities as a runner and passer, coupled with his cool demeanor and ability to absorb information, could thrust Oregon's offense into an even higher orbit.

Let's see. tOSU, ND, BAMA, USC and UO. All we're lacking is a rusty cow QB article for the FN hat trick.

You do need a runner for that offense.

True, hasn't been much of a dual threat qb for Oregon since Dixon. Both Mariota and Bennett are that. MM has been compared to Dixon with his running style.

No one is interested enough for that.

that's been settled, so it was removed from the rotation

Permanently or temporarily settled?

Ash has been named starter and, according to my sources, getting about 90% of 1st team reps.
So, until he gets hurt or really screws up, he's the guy

Texas' best backfield ever?
Views 12726 Comments 146 More Sharing ServicesShare on email08:14 AM ET 08.22 | Thanks in some part to an unsettled quarterback situation, running the ball will be an area of focus in Austin. They may be the best ever. Seriously. And, of course, seriously prematurely. But sophomores Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron and freshman Johnathan Gray could be the best running back threesome -- and Jeremy Hills ain't bad as a fourth-stringer, either -- that Texas has ever had grace Royal-Memorial Stadium at the same time. That's saying a mouthful for a school that's produced two Heisman Trophy running backs, college football's first three-time, 1,000-yard runner and several NFL greats, even some that barely had an impact here. Many of these had overlapping careers. Brown, Bergeron and Gray offer plenty.
