The NL's most dangerous playoff team?

08:12 AM ET 08.28 | Can the Cards string together a stretch drive that will not only lock up a playoff spot but also fuel a postseason run similar to the 20011 edition? Well, I believe they'll reach the postseason but acknowledge they'll see hugely difficult road series approaching at Washington and LA that could complicate the math. ... The league fears this lineup when Beltran, Craig, Holliday and either Molina or Freese are hitting at once. I dare say the Cardinals are the team the other 4 qualifiers would least likely want to see. That said, the Cardinals have put themselves in a vulnerable spot given the likelihood of having to win a 1-game play-in, probably against Atlanta or Washington. This team looks good when it hits. It's hitting now.

Agreed--- the Cards are HOT and the nats are cooling down... They have to watch the Braves who seem to ride the wave longer than anyone...

The article fail to mention the Reds who are at the top of the NL. Miracles are nice but they don't come around that often.

the Braves are so inconsistent offensively that i don't think the Cards have anything to worry about with them in a 1 game playoff. however, as a Braves fan, i am quite concerned about having to face the Cards in that playoff scenario.

I am getting sick and tired of seeing mediocre teams stumble into the playoffs as a wildcard or winner of a weak division. What is the point of having a regular season? Let the best regular season teams meet in for the championship.

The Reds have done this for years now, only to get beat in the playoffs.
StL is hands down, the scariest team in the NL right now.
They have too many bats to cool off and StL has their own pitchers as well...
Lohse is having a great season and Wainright is starting to pitch like the Adam we knew before the injury.
Having those 2 pitching well with our bats, can easily take down any team in the NL.

Mediocre??
This team made the wildcard last year and won the World Series. If they were not the best team, then the best team should have beat them over the 3 series that they had to play.
Lets not forget this team lost Tony LaRussa, signed a rookie manager, then Albert Pujols to the Angels, then Carpenter and Berkman to season ending injuries and are STILL in the hunt.
The best team always prevails in baseball...lets see who can take down the Cards.

The goal is to make the playoffs...
The Reds can win the division, just like last season...but it is a World Series or bust.
When was the last time the Reds won a WS??
Yet the Cards are the defending champs??

Last season, the Cards got hot at the right time but they had no control over what the Braves did or did not do. I look at it like giving a team 4 outs in an inning. Once you get second life, teams thend to capitalize on it. I don't look for this to happen again for years. If the law of averages has any bearing, last year's Cardinal championship should hold them for 20 years before they win it again. This year belongs to the Reds! As far as them always losing in the playoffs, they only made it in 2010 since 1995. It's been 22 years since their sweep of the A's. I think it is time for the limelight to be on the Queen City again this fall. Which reminds me, their stadium was built in 2003. Why hasn't MLB given them an All Star Game?
