San Francisco proving tolerant of PEDs

08:11 AM ET 08.29 | Not long after learning of Melky Cabrera's suspension, the Giants activated Guillermo Mota for the stretch drive. If they win the N.L. West -- and possibly go deep into the playoffs -- they will have done it with large help from at least one chemically aided player. But you can argue that the Giants aren't to blame for Cabrera's drug use against the landscape of this drug-addled sports culture. They didn't know, and they have given every signal that they're distancing themselves from his guilt. The Mota reactivation, however, is another story altogether, and now the Giants are almost fully complicit. More to the point, with the bullpen looking a little thin these days, the Giants are counting on him.

So...the Giants are just like every other team who has had a player caught using PEDs. Good story.

After you make it to the playoffs it is like a new season and no one remembers how you got there or how many games did you win during the season.

This is the organization that turned a blind eye to Barry "Big Head" Bonds' blatant cheating.

Yeah, his proportions were that of a bobble-head. Baseball on the whole is not as enjoyable because we know in the background of all that takes place there's players cheating the history of the game.

Name me one organization that cut ties with a known PED user while he was still productive and under contract.

I think you have hit on why baseball gets howls of outrage over a few cheaters, while the NFL gets a free pass while running a league where all the players have been using PEDs since high school. In baseball comparing the present players to the past is half the fun.

It is why Fenway Park is valuable--it is the same stadium that Ted Williams hit in (and Babe Ruth pitched in). That's why when the Yankees built a new park, they made it the same dimensions as the old one. It makes it easier to compare the present to the past if some things stay constant.

Seems most are using something, just better at hiding it.

Well said. I can say that I used to enjoy comparing players from different eras and would be genuinely excited for players of the present doing anything remarkable compared to the past. When Cal Ripken broke Gehrig's consecutive games played streak I thought it was incredible. When McGwire-Sosa were battling for the HR record in a season, getting the morning paper and checking who did what and finding one of them hit another homer made every day feel a little like Christmas. I was a big sucker as it turns out. I wish MLB took this issue more seriously. Like what was recently discussed...first time offense you're out for a year....second offense you're out for good.

Chastising the team for activating Mota is ridiculous. Mota tested postive for a substance he got from cough medicine. There was no change in Mota's physique or increase in his velocity from prior seasons.

Mota did take steroids and paid the price in 2007. The second suspension was ridiculous and the Giants appropriately are looking past it.

Sure thing Moose.

Nevermind the fact that MLB as a whole allowed steroid use and cashed in on the "era" to help make baseball relevent again. Give me a break.

the major league of baseball would need more than simple urine test, they may have to go farther than that, about blood test? about bone morrow test? about food poison test? about lie test?,, but for sure the sports in any area they need to purge the rules ans implemented them,,,,,
