The next big signing in Chicago

08:14 AM ET 08.29 | The new Cubs regime has its first signature signing, as it on Tuesday made a long-term commitment Starlin Castro. Castro may not be the last recipient of the new largesse. [General manager Jed Hoyer] and his boss, President Theo Epstein, might want to get someone like pitcher Jeff Samardzija locked up soon. "Probably the hardest two things to find are top-of-the-rotation starters and shortstops," Hoyer said. "We made it clear to Starlin that we wanted him to be the first one. We will certainly entertain (more signings) ... on a case-by-case basis. Certainly we won't just start signing players without feeling they are proven to us and are a significant part of our future."

I know it has been another long year on the North Side on reporting on Cubs baseball, but there is no way Strasberg will be a Cub next year or years down the road.

Good work, interns. While you will hopefully change it later, you copied the Strasburg article here. Your attention to detail is outstanding.

Theo is beginning to spend his owners' money.
It will be interesting to see if he learned from his mistakes in Boston in the last three years (Beckett, Lackey, Crawford, etc.) to not pay players more than they are worth.

Jeff Samardzija is a top-of-the rotation starter? He has a career ERA of 4 and a quarter, this year 4.09. You can't hold the win-loss record against him, due to playing for the Cubs, but when did an ERA north of 4 make you a top of the rotation pitcher?

When you are a Cubbie, and one of the best they have available.
Also, it doesn't hurt in Chicago to be an ND football hero!

apparently he has not learn from his own mistakes,, why?? because castro is not worthed 60 or 80 millions for the 7 years long term contract,,,, if theo did had learn from his past errors as a GM, he should have signed castro for 30 millions 7 years deal,,,,

the colorado rockies had signed more than one talented player to a 7 years deal for as little as 30 millions deal, then again it depends who is the GM in charge!!!

now if theo have a plan like the red sox or like the jays, sign the players to a long term contract then trade them all together with their contract to a another team on the july's deadline,,,,, if that's theo's idea then everything would work perffectly,,,
