New roadblock in Coyotes sale

08:19 AM ET 08.30 | "Overtime" barely covers what's happening in the desert. The sale of the Phoenix Coyotes has hit another roadblock with the city of Glendale asking for changes to a $300 million, 20-year arena deal with prospective team buyer Greg Jamison. The city is asking the changes after an Arizona Court of Appeals ruling that moves forward a ballot measure reversing a city sales tax increase. That sales tax increase was approved by the Glendale City Council earlier this summer. It raises $125 million over five years. The city worries if the sales tax measure goes to the November ballot and the increase is reversed it won't be able to afford the Coyotes deal. ... The two sides have been holding private meetings on the sale and the lease deal.

Go Glendalians (Glendalites?). Don't let you tax money be used to prop up millionaires.

why not, every other city does?
That's why I love the whole "we built this" theme in Tampa.
62% publically funded building! (okay, no more, i promise)

Snider built his shiny new stadium with all private money. The only thing the city kicked in was the land that JFK stadium used to sit on and probably some tax breaks. As far as I'm concerned, that should be the model for everyone.

I agree. Jack Kent Cooke built Fed Ex Field where the Redskins play, with private money. Abe Pollin built the Cap Centre where the Caps and the NBA team play, with private money back in the 70s. When they moved downtown he built the Verizon Center, with private money. Both sites got some highway improvements of course and probably they got some tax breaks but I don't know those details. I know that both sites benefitted the taxpayers in Maryland and in Chinatown by improving sleazy, run-down areas into well-lit, safe, areas where tourists, fans go to spend money and generate taxes. Restaurants, hotels, shopping have grown in each area. Privately-owned, privately financed and paying employees who also pay taxes and charging customers for meals and rooms and collecting lots of taxes for local government.
The baseball team however got a new stadium built for them paid for by taxpayers. I doubt that wil happen again very often since taxpayers have (finally) gotten fed up, not only here but all over the country with this stuff.

Win-win all around when it's done this way. Tho, I wouldn't be too sure that the days of taxpayer funded stadiums are over. The threat of moving a team still works as the Vikings demonstrated so well.

If there's no season, there's no reason for anybody wasting their money buying something that already is a losing proposition.

I got a question...since the NHL is still in control of Phoenix doesnt that mean it's a conflict of interest for Bettman to be negotiating the new CBA ??
