Has the NFL run out of good ideas?

08:10 AM ET 08.31 | So much has changed over the decades to bring the NFL into the fore as the United States' most popular sport. From the deep passing game to the blitz, football has benefited from decades of fresh, brilliant advancements. Until now. NFL observers say a new trend has emerged: There are no more great ideas. Due to a confluence of factors, many within the league say that the league's Xs and Os have stalled in their evolution. ... This season, which kicks off next week, the two new trends look to be the no-huddle offense, a retread from the distant NFL past, and the "spread offense," another scheme gleaned from the college ranks. All further confirming that the latest genius football idea hasn't come from the NFL in years.

When you recycle coaches throughout this league, this will happen.

It seems to me that just last season John Fox in Denver invented a pretty unique offense, showing the rest of the league how to get to the playoffs with a quarterback who really wasn't much at throwing the ball.
And then, Bill Belichick figured out how to stuff that offense and shut it down.

Ideas don't win football games..........great talent wins football games.

That was about the only game Belichick figured out how to shut an offense down. The Pats defense was second worst in the NFL last season.

We all know that...thank you! Didn't they somehow get to the Super Bowl though!

In yards given up, yes. In points allowed, which is what counts on the scoreboard, they were somewhere in the middle of the league.
But when Eli got the ball back at the end of the Superbowl, I knew we were up that creek without a paddle. That defense last year couldn't do it when it counted.

We don't need brilliant new ideas and glam to make football great. Just keep train-wreck players, big hits, and close rivalries and we'll all keep watching.

At its core, football is a very basic game. Gimmicks might give a team a temporary advantage, but good fundamentals will prevail in the long run. Look at the teams that are perenially in the playoffs (Steelers, Ravens, Giants, Pats, Colts) - nothing fancy, just solid play on both sides of the ball.

I'd like to see kickoffs go back to the 30 yd line once again.

Here's an idea... stop sissy-fying the game, let there be kick-off returns, hard hits without penalties, fines and suspensions, and let men play the game as they have for years.

It was never gimmicks that made it so popular. It is the game itself. The Roman Colosseum gladiator syndrome. There is a finality to every game that no other sport can duplicate. It is raw and etched in stone when done. We like that. We like that a lot.

While I'm at it, I'd like to see a return to leather helmets as well.

Here's an idea for them:
Settle all the labor disputes early in the offseason. Don't let us get to pre-season with players locked out, substitute refs, scab parking-lot attendants or fat "replacement" cheerleaders.

When they go back to "retro" uniforms, they should play by the rules that were in place when those uniforms were worn.

Yes they did get to the super Bowl because of their high powered offense. Their defense was terrible.
