NFL, officials reopen labor talks

08:25 AM ET 09.01 | The NFL and its on-field officials' union began negotiating again Friday, hoping to end the lockout that resulted in replacement officials working the preseason. The league locked out the NFL Referees Association in early June, then hired replacements, whose work in exhibition games has been heavily criticized. There even was some optimism surrounding Friday's talks, as Michael Arnold, lead negotiator for the officials, said in a statement: "Reports on the economic gap between the NFL and NFLRA are inaccurate." League spokesman Greg Aiello said that statement was accurate. Earlier this week, NFL executive Ray Anderson said the regular season would open with replacement officials and that the league was prepared to use them "as much . . . as necessary" afterward. But the NFL has seen and heard the problems the replacements have had this summer, something that tests the integrity of the sport.

So very irritating. Shame on the NFL for not getting this done before now. No good reason for it, not in a $9+ billion a year industry with growing profits everyday.

Thanks to ridiculous TV contracts and high-profit gate receipts, the NFL lines the pockets of both players, coaches and management. Then they look stupid by taking a stand against referees over pensions and other intramural issues. Way to come off looking like a cutthroat corporation NFL!

I agree that fans come to watch the players and not the refs. However, when the quality of officiating affects the games, then something needs to be done. It won't hurt the NFL to come off a little money to help everyone out some. I'm not saying give them the farm, but both sides need to be reasonable about their position.

Veteran players will have a field day using all the tricks they have learned over the years. There WILL be a record set for offensive holding, and watch the DLs work the refs over screaming they are being held on every play. They always were, but that was part of the game. DBs will clutch, grab and hold and the good ones will get away with it. Ah well, it is all about "integrity" don't ya know.

Oh no.......I know the 90% pro owners posters aren't posting negative comments regarding their beloved owners, no this can't be, let me wake up outta this nightmare.
Oh no........I'm not in a nightmare, these postings are actually being posted by the 90% pro owners base.
IMO the ownes are greedy rich dirtbags and what they did with the players they're now doing with the refs and the shame of it all is that they don't give a damn about what us the fans think even if it comes down to opening the season with waterdown refereeing.

I don't agree that the owners should pay referees more just because they have the money. That's socialist nonsense and bad business. However, they should pay the referees more because this preseason has shown that they can't get equivalent talent more cheaply.

Yeah it's all about player safety, right to the second that it is going to cut into the NFL's profits. Goodel is a joke

that he is! does any commissioner talk out of both sides of his **** better than Goodell. Using replacement refs even for the preseason does not square with his mantra of 'integrity of the game'.

The game is more fun when we can complain about the real refs, The replacements too often look lost and bewildered, and rather than yell at them, I want to help them find the sidelines and a nice bench to sit on for a bit.
