Rams ruining Jackson's Hall pass?

08:03 AM ET 09.03 | As he toils in a Midwestern city with a struggling football team, there is a chance Steven Jackson's career winds up lost in history. Let me throw this out there right now: if Jackson had been drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers, I believe he'd be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. The Steelers would have surrounded him with layers of talent, and astute coaches would deploy SJ39 in a way that maximizes his skill set. Instead, Jackson was drafted by the St. Louis Rams at a time when the mismanaged franchise was about to sink to the bottom of the NFL. And the Rams have stayed there, unable to rise and held down by the dead weight of so many wasted draft choices. Even with everything stacked against him ... Jackson is building a Hall of Fame case.

On this labor Day it is only fitting that those that labor at FN perform in their usual way. How fitting.

Agreed.
There are better runningbacks in the league who won't get in.

Well it is a free board after all. I'm sure listening to our ravings is not really a pressing concern for SI. Plus it's run better than the home page at NFL.com.

There was about a two year stretch when Jackson was among the most feared backs in the NFL. But teams stacking 10 guys in the box every down will stifle even the best RB's. He never had a chance on that team.

Didn't he have a chance to leave the team but resigned anyway? He could have played for the Steelers or perhaps another club but chose not to.

This reporter should worry more about whether he'll have an NFL team in St. Louis to write about in the next few years.

The ironic thing is they have a decent RB in jackson and a No. 1 pick in Bradford (even though he's been bad recently, but that's prob more a by product of being behind a spaghetti strainer for an O line). Usually those are the two hardest pieces to find for a good offense. If you have twwedle dee and tweedle dum at reciever and an avereage offensive line, you should be decent, but i guess it's more a testimate to how bad the rams organization was where they couldn't find the smaller parts of a O and only drafted big names.

If that's true, he stayed because the Hall of Fame is a nice treat after you retire, but it's not as nice as Scrooge McDuck-ing into a a gigantic pile of cash.
No way the Steelers pay any RB $44 million. Mendy's running on $12 mil for 5 years, Redman is making a little over half a million this year. Willie Parker had four consecutive 1000 yard seasons, and we let him walk rather than go above that price point. Bettis, who is easily one of the Nation's most beloved modern era Steelers, had to take a pay cut to stay with the team until his retirement.

Any player with an idiotic nickname like SJ39 should automatically be barred from the HOF.

I would say he needs a good couple of years to get in......but I'd say he deserves it right now anyways. As bad as we've been of late, he still puts up numbers. I mean he's no Bam Morris, but he's still pretty good.
