08:18 AM ET 09.04 | In a breakfast meeting with owner John Henry, Bobby Valentine managed to avoid what many saw coming -- the end of the manager's tenure. And after meeting with a few players, including star second baseman Dustin Pedroia, before a Labor Day matinee at Safeco Field, Henry reiterated ownership's "resolute" stance that Valentine will keep his job for the last 26 games of a season that has been a dreadful disappointment. Once again, though, Henry wouldn't extend a vote of confidence beyond this season, thereby keeping alive the perception that Valentine is a dead manager walking. ... It also wasn't his last as manager of the Red Sox, even though [Monday] felt like little more than a stay of execution.

Someone please just put him out of his misery.

He's not going anywhere, at least not for the rest of this season because it wouldn't serve any purpose. If they fire him then they have to promote someone that won't have a shot at the full time job anyway and that would be wasted time. Lose him at the end of the season and just move on from there.

They do need a change and a fresh start but that should wait until next year. They're going to look at and evaluate everything in the off season and go from there.

It sounds like their committed to keeping him through the end of the season.

Agree; they want to make a choice of new manager without having to find an interim for a month. What difference does it make to keep Bobby V. for another month?
I wouldn't be surprised if the breakfast meeting was to tell Bobby that he would not be retained after the season, but he'll be taken care of financially if he doesn't go off script for the rest of the season.

All we read at the trading deadline was who was going to get Greinke, he gone, and now it is Valentine, please fire him so we don't have to hear about it anymore.

This is absolutely BULL. Valentine was never given a fair shake. You even have the MOORON Curt Schilling say that when he was a player he didn't respect some of his managers and that is the problem. How about having respect for the POSITION. Like him, Hate him, Shouldn't matter, he is the MANAGER. Players should know to respect that. Give him, his coaches, and let him start over. Tell the players that they either play the GAME or be benched. So sick of the MILLION $$$ babies. I personally would enjoy watching some of these guys get pulled and sit. Lester, Aceves, Salty, etc, you stink, your attitude stinks so sit!

There's no purpose in firing Valentine during the season. The team's not going anywhere. All you are doing is rewarding players for whining, which will make it that much harder for the next manager. Who's running the team, the second baseman or management?
